SIGNIFICANT
ACHIEVEMENTS
-
The Directorate
brings out special issues of the research journals, on topics of contemporary
relevance. The issues brought out in the last couple of years include those
on catalysis, Buckminister fullerenes, conducting polymers, recent advances
in fabric formation, contraception and reproductive biology, technology
management and mathematical modelling in S&T, and light wave systems.

The wealth of
India - Raw materials series is being revised and updated. Already
three volumes of the revised series have been brought out. In addition,
a large number monographs on specific and composite topics has been brought
out. Sone of the recent ones are Plants for Reclamation of Wastelands,
Birds, Groundnuts, and Indian Brassicas.

MAPIS database has
been developed computerized and is available on-line to users not only
in India but abroad as well.

Under the Science
Popularization Programme, thirteen books on scientific topics of general
interest have been brought out. Published in English as well as Hindi,
these books have been very well received by the students and general public.
A scientific encyclopedia, Golden Treasury of Science and Technology
has been brought out. This encyclopedia meant for secondary level students
and intellegent laymen with no formal training in science, focuses on Indian
contrubutions also, which receive scant attention in the usual publication
of these type. Many of these books are being translated into regional languages
like Kannada, Tamil, Marathi & Bengali.

Department of Biotechnology
(DBT) has sponsered a project on dissemation of biotechnological information
and under this project NISCOM has been brought out ten books/monographs
on biotechnological topics.

NISCOM & Willey-Eastern
Ltd. (WEL) have started a copublishing programme for making available to
general public resonably priced books under the series entitled "International
Series on Pollution" and "Encyclopedia of Natural Wealth of India Series".
A number of books have already been brought out under the copublishing
programme.

NISCOM has been
selected as the managing organization for an IDRC (canada)-sponsered international
consortium formed for the production and global marketing of a series
of CD-ROM disks. NISCOM has acquired in this futuristic technology and
the first pilot disk has already been produced.
