REGIONAL RESEARCH
INSTITUTE, JORHAT (RRL
- Jorhat)
MANDATE
- To provide R
& D inputs for the effective use of material resources of the North-Eastern
region in particular and the country in general.
- To help in the
economic development and industrialization of the North-Eastern region
in particular and the country in general.
- To develop indegenous
technologies based on the immense natural wealth of the North-Eastern region,
meeting the high international standards in terms of quality, cost and
efficiency.
MAIN FACILITIES
- Facilities for
the analysis and testing of soil, water, sand, metals, minerals, cement,
fertilizers, food products, essential oils, etc.
- A wide range
of modern instruments useful for chemical and geochemical studies.
- Pilot plant
facilities.
- Computer facilities.
- Library services.
SIGNIFICANT
ACHIEVEMENTS
- Development
of improved technology for the production of 16-DPA from diosgenin and
solasodine. The technology has been developed in collaboration with a pharmaceutical
firm under the SPREA programme of ICICI, with a financial support of Rs.
14.6 million plus raw materials.
- Development
of knowhow for production of DL-norgestrel which is used for preparation
of oral contraceptive pills like 'Mala-D' and 'Mala-N'. A major programme
for developing a manufacturing technology for DL-norgestrel has been undertaken
for a Calcutta based industrial house with financial support from ICICI
to the tune of Rs. 13.4 million plus raw material.
- Development
of know-how for production of drugs and chemicals such as berberine, artemisinin,
taxoil, tumor oil derived form certain medicinal plants of South-Eastern
Sub-Himalayan region.
- Develioment
of vertical shaft kiln (VSK) for mini cement plants. Currently 35 mini
cement plants are in operation in the country based on RRL-Johrat technologies.
A modified VSK technology for 30,000 TPA plant has also been developed
to cater to the national and international needs.
- Process development
for for high quality microcrystalline wax, highgrade bitumem needle coke,
and napthenic oils from vacuum residue of Assam crude.
- Development
of a series of pour point depressents for transportation of high waxy crude
oil.
- Development
and introduction of agro-technologies for mushroom cultivation and popularization
of several protein-rich edible mushroom varieties in different areas of
North-Eastern India.
- Development
of agro-technologies for different medicinal and aromatic plants. The laboratory's
contribution to extensive cultivation of citronella grass and extraction
of oil hav eled to the establishment of a major citronella based agro-industry
in the north-eastern region. The annual production of citronella is about
500 tonnes and this has generated employment for 20,000 persons in the
rural sector alone.
- Establishment
of an ecology-park named North-East Ecology Park (NEEP) and introduction
of several medicinal, perfumery and endangered plants grown wild in North-eastern
states. NEEP will act as gene bank-cum-research park for plant bredeers
and biotechnologists.
- Multiplication
of some medicinal, perfumery and endangered plant species by tissue culture.
- Survey, identification
and determination of quality of cinnamum species of North-East India for
commercial exploitation.
- Process development
for pesticides, e.g. Phosphamidon, Quinalphos and Chlorofenvinphos; isolation
and characerization of compounds of plant origin having insecticidal and
antifeedant properties.
- Process development
in the areas of speciality papers and boards including thermographic paper,
carbonless copy paper, direct copy paper, carbon paper, gummed paper tape
and ceiling boards.
- Development
of oil field chemicals/materials like high- and medium strength propants,
chrome lignites, oil-well formation, stabilizer, bioremedial for hydrocarbon
degrading micro-organisms.
