MANDATE
- To carry out
R & D work with a view to helping in the industrial development of
the North western region of the country.
- To help in optimal
utilization of natural resources.
- To explore and
exploit hitherto untapped resources of the region.
- To provide consultancy,
testing and equipment design/fabrication facilities to entrepreneurs, industrial
establishments and government developmental agencies.
MAIN FACILITIES
- A wide range
of analytical and characterization facilities e.g. IR. including one FFT,
UV-VIS spectrophotometers, multinuclear NMR 90 Mhz (for proton), GCMS,
high resolution GCMS, preparative HPLC, C, H analyser.
- Automatic polarimeter.
- JEOL 60 MHz

- Electron microscope.
- DNA transilluminator.
- DX-300, ion
chromatograph, carbohydrates analysis system.
- Isotope laboratory.
- Pilot plant
facilities in the areas of essential oils, and other phytochemicals, fermentation
food and, minerals, papers & boards.
- Well-equipped
workshop.
- A computer centre
is being established with 25 nodes. Local area network with pentium server
and four nodes Unix system.
- Herbarium of
the flora of North-west India.

SIGNIFICANT
ACHIEVEMENTS
- Development
of a new methyl cinamate rich variety of Ocimum Sims, RRL-Oc-12.
- Development
of a new improved eugenol-rich variety of Ocimum gratissimum Linn.,
RRL-Og 14, and its release for commercial exploitation.
- Cultivation
of hops, an important ingredient for the beer industry.
- Development
of protocols for in vitro propagation of saffron.
- Development
of a high temperature tolerant strain of Agaracius bitorquis (edible
mushrooms) suitabke for cultivation in the tropical regions.
- Development
of a complete village-level package for the production of silk.
- Completiomn
of phase-II clinical trials of bioavailability enhanced anti-tuberculosis
formulation AT-3 and commencement of Phase-III trials.
- Development
of a process for for immunorestorative fraction from Tinospora cardifolia.
- Development
of a process for the isolation of 10 -decaetylbaccattin-III, an important
intermediate in the sysnthesis of Taxol which is used in the treatment
of ovarian and breast cancers.
- Development
of a process for the manufacture of improved variety of writing chalk with
minimal dust.
- Developement
of laminated gypsum composite boards as wood substitutes for doors and
windows.
- Optimization
of fermentation parameters for the production of gamma-linolenic acid on
50 litre fermentator scale.
- Development
of a low calorie canned fruits and herbal concentrates.
- Determination
of eco-biological factors responsible for fish mortality at different stages.
