The Report :
This state-of-the-art report covers the historical developments of the decentralised textile industry, analyses entrepreneurial features, production technology, product mix and cost structure prevailing in the industry. It also analyses the growth of supportive organisations, distribution channels & the impact of textile policy on the future growth of the decentralised textile industry.
The historical growth of the industry is traced from the beginning of the 20th century and is followed by an analysis of the system dimensions. The social and cultural factors which go alongwith the traditional background in the handloom industry have together resulted in the development of various forms of entrepreneurial features in the industry. This has been analysed in Chapter Three.
The production technology, product mix and cost structure of the decentralised textile indsutry are the subject matters of Chapters Four, Five & Six. Chapter Seven mainly deals with marketing and distribution channels prevailing in decentralised sector of the Indian textile industry. Chapter Eight analyses the role of supportive organisations like government institutions and co-operative organisations, etc., in the growth of the industry.
The place of the handloom sector in the decentralised textile industry is covered in Chapter Nine, with special emphasis on the growth of the handloom sector after independence, its production technology & analysis of government support for the handloom industry. The final chapter describes the impact of textile policy and analyses the future prospects for the growth of the industry with reference to its inter-relationship with the composite sector, NTC mills and the rapidly growing garment industry.
The Authors :
Dr. Rajnikant Satyavadan Gandhi obtained his M.Sc.(Tech.) and Ph.D. from the University of Leeds, U.K. He has a long service record as a research scientist, guide, educationalist and consultant to the textile industry. He is the member of Staff Selection Committee for Petrofils. He is the President of Colour Group in India and Association of Chemical Technologists, Surat Chapter. His interest range from textile research, education to management research. He has published more than 50 original research papers in several national and international journals and also authored four text books and edited several books on textiles. He has been awarded an honorary Fellowship of Textile Association (India) for his outstanding contribution to research, education and service to the decentralised sector. He is currently the Director of Man-Made Textile Research Association (MANTRA), Surat.
Mr. Y. C. Mehta is a B.Text. from M.S. University of Baroda, and has worked in various textile mills. Since last 6 years he has been working in R & D department of MANTRA as a Junior Scientific Officer. He has presented papers in various seminars and has publications in various national and international journals. He is a co-author of a book `Polypropylene-Fibre to Finish'.
Mr. A. B. Talele is a B.Text. from University of Bombay, M.Tech(Fibre Sc.& Tech.) from IIT, Delhi and presently doing Ph.D. under the guidance of Dr. R. S. Gandhi, Director, MANTRA. He is the co-author of two books, namely, `A guide to crimping/texturing technology' and `Polypropylene-Fibre to Finish' published by MANTRA and has published papers in various national and international journals. He is a member of `Silk, Man-Made Fibre & Products' Sectional Committee of Bureau of Indian Standards. Presently he is Senior Scientific Officer in Man-Made Textiles Research Association, Surat.
