WELCOME TO PRAVIN'S HOME PAGE

Hello !! I am Pravin D. Kunte. I was born in Amaravati, a city in Maharashtra state of India. I completed my schooling in Nagpur and passed Secondary School Certificate Examination in 1974 with first class. I received Bachelor's and Master's degree in Geology with first class from Poona University, Pune in 1979 and 1981 respectively. Later I joined Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai (Bombay) and successfully completed Post- graduate diploma in Advanced Aerial Photo-interpretation in 1982.

I started my research carrier in January 1983 by joining Centre of Studies in Resources Engineering (CSRE) as Research Associate under "Natural Resources Database Management System" (NRDMS) project and worked till July 1987. During this period, I concentrated on processing and interpretation of remotely sensed data for geological studies and on developing database systems for natural resources studies. I received UNESCO fellowship for attending six weeks course on remote sensing application for Earth Sciences organised by International Institute for Aerospace survey and Earth Sciences, Enschede, The Netherlands.

In August 1987, I joined as Scientist in National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Goa. In Indian National Oceanographic Data Centre, my primary responsibility is to develop database for archiving and dissemination of Geological and Geophysical data and secondary is to work for successful development of Marine Remote Sensing Information System under MARSIS program of "National Oceanographic Information System" (NOIS) project. In 1995, IOC offered me fellowship for attending two weeks training course on collection, processing and usage of Marine Geological and Geophysical data for Black and Caspian seas countries. The course was organised by World Data Centre -B for Marine Geology and Geophysics, Gelendzhik, Krasnodar, Russia.

I developed research interest in application of remote sensing in coastal studies with special emphasis on determination of longshore drift direction along geomorphologically and oceanographically varied coastal shores. Net shore drift direction along west coast of India was determined by studying various coastal landform indicators and offshore turbid water movements and their distribution pattern. Coastal landform study was further stretched to identify possible sediment sources and sinks. Contribution of sources and losses due to sinks were assessed qualitatively for predicting sediment budget.

During my fourteen years of research career, I have 14 papers in referred National & International journals, 12 papers in proceedings and books, 2 technical reports, and 10 internal reports to my credit. My research experience has provided me a composite background in the field of geology, databases, remote sensing and coastal studies, which I wish to utilize in pursuing my proposed Doctoral studies. I live in Goa with my son Yash and wife Priya.
