Photo of the Liggett and Myers Tobacco Factory after the May 27, 1896, Great St. Louis Tornado

At the Liggett and Myers Tobacco Factory, which was in the process of being constructed, several workmen took refuge in the basement. Unfortunately, the building’s massive iron framework fell through the main floor onto them. Few of the workers escaped with their lives. Courtesy of the NOAA Photo Library.
