This dataset contains a high quality operational environmental data record (EDR) that contains pinpoint locations of active fires (AF) as identified by an algorithm based on the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Fires and Thermal Anomalies Collection 4 product, but improved upon and adapted for use by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer (VIIRS) instrument onboard the Suomi-NPP satellite. The product also contains quality information which provides support information on the quality of fire retrievals. The algorithm utilizes sensor data from the 4 micron and 11 micron spectral bands (M13 and M15), at a spatial resolution of 750 meters at nadir to deliver a list of fire pixels at a given location on Earth approximately every 12 hours. By default, IDPS VIIRS AF data obtained from the Comprehensive Large Array-Data Stewardship System (CLASS) are distributed as aggregated files of four 86-second granules in Hierarchical Data Format v.5 (HDF5) file format with metadata attributes included.
