The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) is a scanning radiometer on board Suomi NPP, NOAA-20, and NOAA-21 that collects visible and infrared imagery and radiometric measurements of the land, atmosphere, cryosphere, and oceans. Level-1 Sensor Data Records (SDRs) from VIIRS include calibrated radiance, reflectance, and geolocation data and produced from the Raw Data Records. There are 22 VIIRS SDRs: 16 moderate-resolution, narrow-spectral-band products at 750 meter resolution, five imaging-resolution, narrow-spectral-band products at 375 meter resolution and one Day-Night Band imaging broadband product at 750 meter resolution. These SDRs are used as input to produce several Environmental Data Records (EDR) products. VIIRS SDR data obtained from the NOAA Comprehensive Large Array-Data Stewardship System (CLASS) are distributed as aggregated 5.6 minute files consisting of four granules in the Hierarchical Data Format v.5 (HDF5) with metadata attributes included.

PurposeThe VIIRS SDRs are used to create a variety of Environmental Data Records (EDRs), such as Sea Surface Temperature, Vegetation Indices, Ocean Color, etc., for global and regional analysis and as input in the weather forecast models to improve short and long term forecasts. The VIIRS datasets extend the data records provided by the earlier NASA Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS).
