National Weather Service Station Information System

**Please note, this dataset has been superseded by a newer version (see below). New version is only used starting from the last date this version was updated.** National Weather Service (NWS) Station Information System (SIS) contains observing station metadata from November 2014 to present. These are renditions are used to update the Historical Observing Metadata Repository (HOMR) daily. Within this dataset will be embedded PDFs which will be loaded into Environmental Document Access and Display System (EDADS) Version 2 (EV2) and JSON machine readable version of the information on the PDFs which will be integrated into Historical Observing Metadata Repository (HOMR). Currently only Cooperative ObserverProgram (COOP) (www.nws.noaa.gov/os/coop) station metadata are being submitted. NWS plans to add additional types of stations to this dataset which will may require additional data elements.

Download Data	Historical Observing Metadata Repository (download) HOMR tracks detailed information for a variety of weather stations throughout their lifespans, including identifiers, names, locations, equipment modifications, reporting methods, etc. EV2 Image Access System (download) EV2 Information and Data Access Page for PDF containing observing station metadata. The NWS SIS images are in the Cooperative Station History Forms Library in EV2.

Purpose	These data update HOMR, the NCDC's land-based station history system, which is used in support of NCDC research, reporting, data products, and web applications. The PDFs are used by both NWS and NCDC doing data research involving COOP stations.

Processing Steps	2015-04-22T00:00:00 - NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.
