Joaquin was a major hurricane that was ongoing at the beginning of the month. Joaquin strengthened into a category 4 hurricane later that day and maintained that intensity until 2 October when it weakened to just below category 4 status. Joaquin re-intensified on 3 October to just below category 5 strength while moving slowly southwestward into the central Bahamas, killing 34 people. Joaquin moved northeastward and steadily weakened as it passed just west of Bermuda on 5 October and became an extratropical low over the far North Atlantic on 7 October. Based on a 30-year (1981-2010) climatology, two named storms typically form in the Atlantic basin in October, with one becoming a hurricane. A major hurricane forms in October once every other year. In terms of Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE), which measures the combined strength and duration of tropical storms and hurricanes, activity in the Atlantic basin through October has only been about 58 percent of the 30-year average. Reports on individual cyclones, when completed, are available at the National Hurricane Center website at www.nhc.noaa.gov/data/tcr/index.php?season=2015&basin=atl .
