Marine Seismic Reflection

Geophysical surveying provides a relatively rapid and cost-effective means of deriving regionally distributed information on subsurface geology. The unique properties of seismic reflection allow the direct application of geologic concepts based on physical stratigraphy. NCEI maintains a large volume of both analog and digital seismic reflection data.

Trackline Geophysical Data Viewer

The Trackline Geophysical Data Viewer is an interactive map tool that can be used to search and access data by geographic area, survey year, survey name, institution, platform, date added to the database, and data type. Contact trackline.info@noaa.gov with questions.

Historic Seismic Datasets

Some historic seismic reflection datasets were sent to NCEI either as compilations of multiple surveys, or without digital navigation. Those data are not readily discoverable via searches. Information about these datasets are provided below with links to more detailed information.

Please note that data from many of the datasets on this list may also be discoverable/downloadable via the geophysical survey viewer.

Dataset Availability

Currently, only some lines are available online. Digital data include SEGY files and scanned images of the full-scale section as well as shot point navigation. Additional digital seismic reflection data are available on request and can be searched for (along with other underway geophysical data) using the geophysical survey data viewer link.

A search for seismic reflection data using the Marine Trackline Geophysics database will determine what data exist in a region. Digital data and scanned images of former analog data, submitted with digital navigation are directly downloadable from searches.
