Recognizing that tsunamis are a global threat, the United Nations General Assembly designated November 5 as World Tsunami Awareness Day. This date was chosen to honor the brave actions of a Japanese farmer and village chief credited with saving many lives from a tsunami on December 24, 1854 (November 5th Japanese calendar).
NCEI and the co-located World Data Service for Geophysics compile a unique set of tsunami-related products as part of a continuing program to support the interests of tsunami warning centers, engineers, oceanographers, seismologists, and the public.
The Global Historical Tsunami Database consists of information on tsunami events from 2000 B.C. to the present in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans, and the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas.
