GCOS Surface Network Reports GSN reports provide summary counts detailing the quantity and types of surface observations found in the Integrated Surface Hourly (ISH) database and indicators of the presence or absence of CLIMAT data in the Monthly Climatic Data of the World (MCDW) database at the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). GSN summary reports are provided in two formats, (1) summaries of surface reports and CLIMAT data, and (2) summaries of the report types (METAR, SYNOP, etc) contained in the ISH database. Reports are organized by region and WMO number. -------------- Format #1: These files provide monthly summaries for surface reports in the Integrated Surface Hourly (ISH) database and the CLIMAT reports in the Monthly Climatic Data of the World (MCDW) database. ISH data are summarized by total observations and synoptic observations. These data are provided in two file sizes. The first is smaller and contains statistics for six months or more of the latest data months, and the second is larger and contains statistic beginning with January, 2001. (a) Filename: GSN_sum_yyyymm_YYYYMM.txt where yyyymm is the starting year and month in the report, and YYYYMM is the latest available year and month. This file contains at least six months of the latest available data. The first month will always be January. (b) Filename: GSN_sum_200101_YYYYMM.txt where YYYYMM is the latest available year and month. This file contains a complete summary starting in January, 2001 through the latest available month of data. ---------------- Format #2: These files provide summaries of the report types (METAR, SYNOP, etc) in the Integrated Surface Hourly database. Column totals in the reports provide hourly counts for the station-year. Filename: GSN_types_YYYY.txt where YYYY is the data year.
