Here, more than 1,700 ´13C observations of the benthic foraminifera genus Cibicides from late Holocene sediments (´13CCibnat) are compiled and compared with newly updated estimates of the natural (pre-industrial) water-column ´13C of dissolved inorganic carbon (´13CDICnat) as part of the international Ocean Circulation and Carbon Cycling (OC3) project. Using selection criteria based on the spatial distance between samples we find high correlation between ´13CCibnat and ´13CDICnat, confirming earlier work. Regression analyses indicate significant carbonate ion (-2.6±0.4)×10-3 0/(¼mol kg-1) [CO32-] and pressure (-4.9±1.7)×10-3 0 m-1 (depth) effects, which we use to propose a new global calibration for predicting ´13CDICnat from ´13CCibnat. This calibration is shown to remove some systematic regional biases and decrease errors compared with the one-to-one relationship (´13CDICnat = ´13CCibnat). However, these effects and the error reductions are relatively small, which suggests that most conclusions from previous studies using a one-to-one relationship remain robust. The remaining standard error of the regression is generally à E 0.25 0, with larger values found in the southeast Atlantic and Antarctic (à E 0.4 0) and for species other than Cibicides wuellerstorfi. Discussion of species effects and possible sources of the remaining errors may aid future attempts to improve the use of the benthic ´13C record.","pubRank":"1"}],"site":[{"NOAASiteId":"Unspecified","siteName":"Unspecified","siteCode":null,"mappable":null,"locationName":null,"geo":null,"paleoData":[{"dataTableName":"Global Sediment Core Top Schmittner17","NOAADataTableId":"32775","earliestYear":6000,"mostRecentYear":0,"timeUnit":"cal yr BP","earliestYearBP":6000,"mostRecentYearBP":0,"earliestYearCE":-4050,"mostRecentYearCE":1950,"coreLengthMeters":null,"dataTableNotes":"core flag : 0 - unassigned\r\n1 (best) - MC (Multicore - some institutions might just use M), BC (Box Core), or Push Core (which is not PC, but would be from a submersible such as Alvin). \r\n2 (good)- TC (trigger core),GC (gravity core), KC (kasten core)\r\n3 (acceptable)- PC (piston core), JC or JPC (jumbo piston core), GPC (giant piston core)\r\n4 (last resort)- H,R,X (drill cores: H = hydraulic, R=Rotory, X=extended core barrel)\r\n5 (try not to use)- G (grab), or D (dredge)","species":[],"dataFile":[{"fileUrl":"https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/contributions_by_author/schmittner2017/schmittner2017-coretop.txt","urlDescription":"Formatted Text File","linkText":"Core Top Data","variables":[],"NOAAKeywords":["earth science>paleoclimate>paleocean>carbon isotopes"]},{"fileUrl":"https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/contributions_by_author/schmittner2017/rS17/","urlDescription":"Data Folder","linkText":"R Scripts","variables":[],"NOAAKeywords":["earth science>paleoclimate>paleocean>carbon isotopes"]},{"fileUrl":"https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/contributions_by_author/schmittner2017/coretop_supp/","urlDescription":"Data Folder","linkText":"Supplementary files including datasets used and original Excel file","variables":[],"NOAAKeywords":["earth science>paleoclimate>paleocean>carbon isotopes"]}]}]}],"reference":{"pastThesaurusSkos":"https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/paleo-search/skos/past-thesaurus.rdf","pastThesaurusExplorer":"https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/paleo-search/cvterms","gcmdKeywordThesaurus":"https://earthdata.nasa.gov/earth-observation-data/find-data/idn/gcmd-keywords"},"dataLicenseDescription":null,"dataLicenseUrl":null}
