The extent to which these observed trends are exceptional has implications for current water management and seasonal streamflow forecasting practices. We present a new reconstruction of runoff ratio for the Upper Rio Grande basin back to 1571 CE, which provides evidence that the declining trend in runoff ratio from the 1980s to present-day is unprecedented in context of the last 445 years. Though runoff ratio is found to vary primarily in proportion to precipitation, the reconstructions suggest a secondary influence of temperature. In years of low precipitation, very low runoff ratios are made 2.5-3 times more likely by high temperatures. This temperature sensitivity appears to have strengthened in recent decades, implying future water management vulnerability should recent warming trends in the region continue.","pubRank":"1"}],"site":[{"NOAASiteId":"57193","siteName":"Otowi Bridge","siteCode":null,"mappable":"Y","locationName":"Continent>North America>United States Of America>New Mexico","geo":{"geoType":"Feature","geometry":{"type":"POINT","coordinates":["35.8747","-106.1414"]},"properties":{"southernmostLatitude":"35.8747","northernmostLatitude":"35.8747","westernmostLongitude":"-106.1414","easternmostLongitude":"-106.1414","minElevationMeters":null,"maxElevationMeters":null}},"paleoData":[{"dataTableName":"Lehner2017SFE","NOAADataTableId":"33196","earliestYear":1571,"mostRecentYear":2015,"timeUnit":"CE","earliestYearBP":379,"mostRecentYearBP":-65,"earliestYearCE":1571,"mostRecentYearCE":2015,"coreLengthMeters":null,"dataTableNotes":null,"species":[],"dataFile":[{"fileUrl":"https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/treering/reconstructions/newmexico/lehner2017riogrande-readme.txt","urlDescription":"Data Description","linkText":"Lehner et al. 2017 Readme File","variables":[],"NOAAKeywords":["earth science>paleoclimate>reconstructions>precipitation","earth science>paleoclimate>reconstructions>streamflow"]},{"fileUrl":"https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/treering/reconstructions/newmexico/lehner2017riogrande-flow.txt","urlDescription":"Comma Separated Values (CSV) File","linkText":"1000 Member Ensemble of Streamflow Reconstructions","variables":[{"cvDataType":"CLIMATE RECONSTRUCTIONS|TREE RING","cvWhat":"age variable>age","cvMaterial":null,"cvError":null,"cvUnit":"time unit>age unit>year Common Era","cvSeasonality":null,"cvDetail":null,"cvMethod":null,"cvAdditionalInfo":null,"cvFormat":"Numeric","cvShortName":null},{"cvDataType":"CLIMATE RECONSTRUCTIONS|TREE RING","cvWhat":"earth system variable>hydroclimatic variable>hydroclimate rate>streamflow","cvMaterial":null,"cvError":"ensemble member","cvUnit":"volume unit>acre foot","cvSeasonality":"annual","cvDetail":null,"cvMethod":null,"cvAdditionalInfo":"units are 1000s of acre feet","cvFormat":"Numeric","cvShortName":null}],"NOAAKeywords":["earth science>paleoclimate>reconstructions>streamflow"]},{"fileUrl":"https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/treering/reconstructions/newmexico/lehner2017riogrande-precip.txt","urlDescription":"Comma Separated Values (CSV) File","linkText":"1000 Member Ensemble of Precipitation Reconstructions","variables":[{"cvDataType":"CLIMATE RECONSTRUCTIONS|TREE RING","cvWhat":"age variable>age","cvMaterial":null,"cvError":null,"cvUnit":"time unit>age unit>year Common Era","cvSeasonality":null,"cvDetail":null,"cvMethod":null,"cvAdditionalInfo":null,"cvFormat":"Numeric","cvShortName":null},{"cvDataType":"CLIMATE RECONSTRUCTIONS|TREE RING","cvWhat":"earth system variable>hydroclimatic variable>hydroclimate rate>precipitation","cvMaterial":null,"cvError":"ensemble member","cvUnit":"volume unit>acre foot","cvSeasonality":"annual","cvDetail":null,"cvMethod":null,"cvAdditionalInfo":"units are 1000s of acre feet","cvFormat":"Numeric","cvShortName":null}],"NOAAKeywords":["earth science>paleoclimate>reconstructions>precipitation"]},{"fileUrl":"https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/treering/reconstructions/newmexico/lehner2017riogrande-runoff.txt","urlDescription":"Comma Separated Values (CSV) File","linkText":"1000 Member Ensemble of Runoff Ratio Reconstructions","variables":[{"cvDataType":"CLIMATE RECONSTRUCTIONS|TREE RING","cvWhat":"age variable>age","cvMaterial":null,"cvError":null,"cvUnit":"time unit>age unit>year Common Era","cvSeasonality":null,"cvDetail":null,"cvMethod":null,"cvAdditionalInfo":null,"cvFormat":"Numeric","cvShortName":null},{"cvDataType":"CLIMATE RECONSTRUCTIONS|TREE RING","cvWhat":"earth system variable>hydroclimatic variable>hydroclimate ratio>runoff coefficient","cvMaterial":null,"cvError":"ensemble member","cvUnit":"dimensionless","cvSeasonality":"annual","cvDetail":null,"cvMethod":null,"cvAdditionalInfo":null,"cvFormat":"Numeric","cvShortName":null}],"NOAAKeywords":["earth science>paleoclimate>reconstructions>streamflow"]}]}]}],"reference":{"pastThesaurusSkos":"https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/paleo-search/skos/past-thesaurus.rdf","pastThesaurusExplorer":"https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/paleo-search/cvterms","gcmdKeywordThesaurus":"https://earthdata.nasa.gov/earth-observation-data/find-data/idn/gcmd-keywords"},"dataLicenseDescription":null,"dataLicenseUrl":null}
