Its water quality is controlled primarily by streamflow from the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers. In fact, freshwater inflow from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta explains 86% of the salinity variability at the mouth of the San Francisco Bay estuary [Peterson et al., 1989]. The massive diversion of streamflow by the California State Water Project and the Central Valley Project, part of the largest manmade water control system on Earth [Reisner, 1988], has raised salinity in the estuary on daily, seasonal, and annual timescales [Nichols et al., 1986; Peterson et al., 1989].","pubRank":"1"}],"site":[{"NOAASiteId":"56366","siteName":"Fort Point, San Francisco","siteCode":null,"mappable":"Y","locationName":"Continent>North America>United States Of America>California","geo":{"geoType":"Feature","geometry":{"type":"POINT","coordinates":["37.810556","-122.477222"]},"properties":{"southernmostLatitude":"37.810556","northernmostLatitude":"37.810556","westernmostLongitude":"-122.477222","easternmostLongitude":"-122.477222","minElevationMeters":null,"maxElevationMeters":null}},"paleoData":[{"dataTableName":"Stahle2001SFbs","NOAADataTableId":"38292","earliestYear":1604,"mostRecentYear":1997,"timeUnit":"CE","earliestYearBP":346,"mostRecentYearBP":-47,"earliestYearCE":1604,"mostRecentYearCE":1997,"coreLengthMeters":null,"dataTableNotes":null,"species":[],"dataFile":[{"fileUrl":"https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/treering/reconstructions/california/sfbay_salinity-noaa.txt","urlDescription":"NOAA Template File","linkText":"Salinity Reconstruction","variables":[{"cvDataType":"CLIMATE RECONSTRUCTIONS|INSTRUMENTAL|TREE RING","cvWhat":"age variable>age","cvMaterial":null,"cvError":null,"cvUnit":"time unit>age unit>year Common Era","cvSeasonality":null,"cvDetail":null,"cvMethod":null,"cvAdditionalInfo":null,"cvFormat":"Numeric","cvShortName":"age_CE"},{"cvDataType":"INSTRUMENTAL","cvWhat":"chemical composition>solution property>salinity","cvMaterial":null,"cvError":null,"cvUnit":"concentration unit>parts per notation unit>parts per thousand","cvSeasonality":"7-month period>Jan-Jul","cvDetail":null,"cvMethod":null,"cvAdditionalInfo":"San Francisco Bay estuary","cvFormat":"Numeric","cvShortName":"Observed"},{"cvDataType":"CLIMATE RECONSTRUCTIONS|TREE RING","cvWhat":"chemical composition>solution property>salinity","cvMaterial":null,"cvError":null,"cvUnit":"concentration unit>parts per notation unit>parts per thousand","cvSeasonality":"7-month period>Jan-Jul","cvDetail":null,"cvMethod":null,"cvAdditionalInfo":null,"cvFormat":"Numeric","cvShortName":"Reconstructed"}],"NOAAKeywords":["earth science>paleoclimate>reconstructions"]}]}]}],"reference":{"pastThesaurusSkos":"https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/paleo-search/skos/past-thesaurus.rdf","pastThesaurusExplorer":"https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/paleo-search/cvterms","gcmdKeywordThesaurus":"https://earthdata.nasa.gov/earth-observation-data/find-data/idn/gcmd-keywords"},"dataLicenseDescription":null,"dataLicenseUrl":null}
