The reconstructions, ultimately in the form of gridpoint anomaly time series, are produced using a principal-components regression technique to relate variability in a network of up to 53 high-elevation maximum latewood-density chronologies to a number of important temperature principal-component amplitude series. The reconstructions are of good quality over the area between 35° and 55°N but are subject to large uncertainty north of 55°N, particularly prior to 1750. Four regional time series, the average of between two and six gridpoint seriesBritish Columbia and the Pacific Northwest, California, eastern Rockies and northern High Plains, and the Southwest desertsplus one more-extensive western United States series are presented and described. Examples of individual-year and decadal-mcan anomaly maps are illustrated, and the results of preliminary spectral analyses of the regional time series are described.","pubRank":"1"}],"site":[{"NOAASiteId":"56377","siteName":"Western North America","siteCode":null,"mappable":"N","locationName":"Continent>North America","geo":{"geoType":"Feature","geometry":{"type":"POLYGON","coordinates":["30","65","-150","-100"]},"properties":{"southernmostLatitude":"30","northernmostLatitude":"65","westernmostLongitude":"-150","easternmostLongitude":"-100","minElevationMeters":null,"maxElevationMeters":null}},"paleoData":[{"dataTableName":"Briffa1992","NOAADataTableId":"38380","earliestYear":1600,"mostRecentYear":1983,"timeUnit":"CE","earliestYearBP":350,"mostRecentYearBP":-33,"earliestYearCE":1600,"mostRecentYearCE":1983,"coreLengthMeters":null,"dataTableNotes":null,"species":[],"dataFile":[{"fileUrl":"https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/treering/reconstructions/westnamerica/briffa1992/briffa1992.txt","urlDescription":"Data","linkText":"briffa1992.txt","variables":[{"cvDataType":"CLIMATE RECONSTRUCTIONS|TREE RING","cvWhat":"age variable>age","cvMaterial":null,"cvError":null,"cvUnit":"time unit>age unit>year Common Era","cvSeasonality":null,"cvDetail":null,"cvMethod":null,"cvAdditionalInfo":null,"cvFormat":"Numeric","cvShortName":null},{"cvDataType":"CLIMATE RECONSTRUCTIONS|TREE RING","cvWhat":"earth system variable>temperature variable>temperature>air temperature>surface air temperature","cvMaterial":"reconstruction material>physical measurement>ring density","cvError":null,"cvUnit":"temperature unit>degree Celsius","cvSeasonality":"6-month period>Apr-Sep","cvDetail":"anomalized","cvMethod":"computational method>statistical analysis method>principal component analysis|computational method>statistical analysis method>regression analysis","cvAdditionalInfo":"based on latewood density; reference period: 1951-1970 A.D.; calibration data set: Jones et al. 1986; principal components regression","cvFormat":"Numeric","cvShortName":null},{"cvDataType":"CLIMATE RECONSTRUCTIONS|TREE RING","cvWhat":"sampling metadata>latitude","cvMaterial":null,"cvError":null,"cvUnit":"angle unit>degree>degree north","cvSeasonality":null,"cvDetail":null,"cvMethod":null,"cvAdditionalInfo":null,"cvFormat":"Numeric","cvShortName":null},{"cvDataType":"CLIMATE RECONSTRUCTIONS|TREE RING","cvWhat":"sampling metadata>longitude","cvMaterial":null,"cvError":null,"cvUnit":"angle unit>degree>degree east","cvSeasonality":null,"cvDetail":null,"cvMethod":null,"cvAdditionalInfo":null,"cvFormat":"Numeric","cvShortName":null}],"NOAAKeywords":["earth science>paleoclimate>reconstructions"]}]}]}],"reference":{"pastThesaurusSkos":"https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/paleo-search/skos/past-thesaurus.rdf","pastThesaurusExplorer":"https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/paleo-search/cvterms","gcmdKeywordThesaurus":"https://earthdata.nasa.gov/earth-observation-data/find-data/idn/gcmd-keywords"},"dataLicenseDescription":null,"dataLicenseUrl":null}
