Synopsis... One of the warmest and driest late-spring through mid-winter periods on record resulted in intense drought conditions across northern and central Arizona. However, a series of Pacific storm systems in late January and again in mid February brought beneficial rain and snow to portions of northern Arizona, especially from Flagstaff to the White Mountains, southward into Yavapai and Gila counties. In the latest US Drought Monitor issued February 18th, the drought depiction was improved by one category to D2 (Severe Drought) in portions of Yavapai and southern Coconino counties including Flagstaff, Sedona, and Prescott. Synopsis... After a series of winter storms finally brought some minor drought relief to the region in January, a dry weather pattern has settled back into the region this February. Despite the recent lull in precipitation, snow cover through higher terrain locations of Arizona remains modest ranging from 40-80% of normal. Lower elevation rainfall totals in January were quite beneficial with parts of SW Arizona actually receiving around one third of their average annual rainfall in just a couple days. However most of the region received far lower totals, and overall benefits were rather muted. The exception was moderate (D1) to severe (D2) conditions across western Pima county. Precipitation: Although the area saw some widespread rainfall during the second half of January, the 12-month rainfall totals for portions of southeast Arizona are at or near the record driest levels through the end of January. Small sliver of Severe (D2) drought is present across the western Mojave Desert of San Bernardino County in eastern California. .Precipitation: A few weather systems in late January and early February provided brief periods of precipitation across the area. Much of the better precipitation fell across the southern Sierra Nevada as snow.
