BOX 20210319 <![CDATA[ National Weather Service Boston/Norton MA 145 PM EST Mon Jan 19 2021 ...STATE DROUGHT DECLARATIONS END ACROSS CONNECTICUT AND MASSACHUSETTS... ...STATE DROUGHT DECLARATION CONTINUES IN RHODE ISLAND... .SYNOPSIS... As of January 14, the U.S. Drought Monitor (USDM) indicated normal conditions across the southern New England States of MA, CT and RI. Generous precipitation during December and a significant rainfall event on January 16th brought additional recovery from the 2020 drought. .Precipitation: December 2020 brought an abundance of precipitation to southern New England, bringing the area out of drought conditions and prompting minor flooding on a few area rivers. Precipitation for December, inclusive of rain and melted snow, ranged from 5 to 8 inches across western MA, north central and northeast MA, north central CT, the outer Cape and Nantucket. These totals were 1 to 4 inches above normal. Higher December precipitation totals of 7 to over 10 inches fell across south central to southeast MA, the Boston area, Marthas Vineyard, the mid and upper Cape, Rhode Island and northeast CT. These precipitation totals were 3 to 6 inches above normal. January 2021 precipitation month-to-date ranged between 1.75 and 2.5 inches across most of the region. This was near normal to about 1 inch below normal. .Temperatures: Temperatures during December averaged 1.5 to 4 degrees above normal. Temperatures from January 1 to 18 averaged 5 to 9 degrees above normal. .Hydrologic conditions: Streamflows across southern New England ranged from normal to much above normal. Groundwater levels varied somewhat, but were mainly in the normal to above normal range. .DROUGHT MITIGATION ACTIONS: During January, the Connecticut Interagency Drought Workgroup (IDW) determined that the drought conditions had ended across the State.
