NOAA/NGDC Paleoclimatology Program, Boulder CO, USA. GEOGRAPHIC REGION: Global PERIOD OF RECORD: 9900-14500 YBP. LIST OF FILES: Hughen1998.readme(this file), splinedata.txt(Tab-delimited text), splinedata.xls (Microsoft Excel format). DESCRIPTION: Files splinedata.txt and splinedata.xls contain raw Cariaco Basin 14C dates with their varve (calendar) ages, in addition to a decadally sampled spline data set that is fitted to the raw data and provides a continuous calibration curve. Files PC56.greyscale.age.data.txt and PC56.greyscale.age.xls were added to the archive in February 1999. These data supercede the calendar age model shown (but no data provided) in the Hughen, 1996 paper, which was not based on calendar varves but only CALIB-calibrated 14C dates. THE 14C AGE SCALE IS ONLY A SUBJECTIVELY INTERPRETED AGE MODEL! It by neccesity has to smooth out reversals and plateaus, and therefore the 14C and calendar age scales can't be plotted together to be used for 14C calibration. The 14C and calendar age scales are only provided for comparison to other 14C-dated (ibid) paleoclimate records.
