Although the ITCZ is thought to experience the largest shifts in position during deglacial stadial events, the magnitude of shifts has proven difficult to reconstruct, in part because of a paucity of high-resolution records, particularly those including spatial components. Here, we track the position of the ITCZ from 150-110 ka at three sites in the central equatorial Pacific at sub-millennial time resolution. Our results provide the first evidence of large, abrupt changes in tropical climate during the penultimate deglaciation, coincident with North Atlantic Heinrich Stadial 11 (~136-129 ka). We identify this event both as a northern hemisphere increase in aeolian dust and as a shift in the mean position of the ITCZ a minimum of four degrees southwards at 160°W. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: National Science Foundation # Grant: AGS-1502889, NSF OCE-1003374, OCE-1159053, OCE-1158886 #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Comer Science and Education Foundation # Grant: #--------------------------------------- # Site Information # Site_Name: ML1208-17 # Location: Central Equatorial Pacific # Country: # Northernmost_Latitude: 0.48 # Southernmost_Latitude: 0.48 # Easternmost_Longitude: -156.45 # Westernmost_Longitude: -156.45 # Elevation: -2926 #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: ML1208-17PC_Dust_Flux Jacobel16 # First_Year: 147900 # Last_Year: 111500 # Time_Unit: cal yrBP # Core_Length: # Notes: #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: #--------------------------------------- # Variables # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-longname components (9 components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, archive, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) ## depth_cm depth,,,cm,,,,,N ## age_calkaBP age,,,calendar kyr before present,,,,,N ## dustflux-Th dust flux,230Thxs,0-normalized 232Th fluxes,,g/cm2/kyr,,Paleoceanography,,analytical technique: isotope dilution mass spectrometry (Element XR ICP-MS),N ## dustflux-Th_err.2s dust flux,230Thxs,0-normalized 232Th fluxes,two standard deviations,g/m2/yr,,Paleoceanography,,,N #------------------------ # Data # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing Value: depth_cm age_calkaBP dustflux-Th dustflux-Th_err.2s 297 111.5 0.162 0.002322064 298 113.0 0.145 0.002009953 299 114.5 0.141 0.001960282 300 116.0 0.147 0.002162403 303 119.2 0.128 0.005612481 304 120.0 0.132 0.00180324 305 120.8 0.122 0.005100547 305 120.8 0.116 0.00189368 307 122.3 0.129 0.006222057 308 122.6 0.135 0.00883401 309 122.9 0.126 0.007400193 310 123.2 0.130 0.007041414 311 123.5 0.130 0.012693248 312 123.8 0.119 0.004799315 313 124.1 0.136 0.006616026 314 124.4 0.123 0.005472538 315 124.7 0.131 0.007570348 316 125.0 0.139 0.007687098 317 125.4 0.137 0.007782199 318 125.7 0.141 0.006926568 319 126.0 0.138 0.006930348 320 126.3 0.145 0.006435548 321 126.6 0.156 0.009697043 322 126.9 0.149 0.005733064 323 127.4 0.158 0.006403892 324 127.8 0.157 0.008121485 324 127.8 0.136 0.002019034 325 128.3 0.176 0.009025536 326 128.7 0.192 0.014782679 327 129.2 0.190 0.0099761 328 129.6 0.198 0.01309815 329 130.1 0.237 0.013606205 330 130.6 0.238 0.012219983 331 131.0 0.235 0.01176451 332 131.4 0.250 0.011782166 333 131.7 0.272 0.015801555 334 132.0 0.304 0.016637843 335 132.3 0.276 0.004844139 336 132.6 0.284 0.005379378 337 132.9 0.309 0.005705778 338 133.2 0.296 0.006797712 339 133.5 0.327 0.00600386 340 133.8 0.314 0.005359999 341 134.1 0.325 0.006003344 342 134.4 0.335 0.007015338 343 134.7 0.323 0.007006745 344 135.0 0.302 0.007193258 345 135.3 0.306 0.005175395 346 135.6 0.254 0.004546179 347 136.0 0.272 0.005200241 348 136.4 0.257 0.004691915 349 136.9 0.262 0.003949207 350 137.4 0.261 0.00415256 351 137.8 0.261 0.004272407 352 138.3 0.246 0.003830717 353 138.8 0.261 0.004112702 354 139.3 0.262 0.004075545 355 139.7 0.277 0.004479924 356 140.2 0.271 0.00425863 357 140.5 0.276 0.004389181 361 141.4 0.251 0.00479543 361 141.4 0.282 0.004504345 362 141.6 0.280 0.004422656 363 141.8 0.271 0.004390749 364 142.0 0.269 0.004245634 366 142.5 0.276 0.004401777 368 142.9 0.277 0.004321338 370 143.4 0.283 0.004291276 372 143.8 0.278 0.004194222 374 144.3 0.277 0.004086976 376 144.7 0.285 0.004062538 378 145.2 0.274 0.004688715 380 145.6 0.266 0.004720313 384 146.5 0.281 0.004924742 386 147.0 0.297 0.005996875 390 147.9 0.297 0.005300737
