Here we show scleractinian coral P/Ca proxy records of variations in phosphate concentrations during El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycles in the central equatorial Pacific. Covarying P/Ca records in Porites corals from Christmas and Fanning Islands show a regional ~40% decrease during the upwelling relaxation of the 1997-1998 El Niño, consistent with less frequent nutrient measurements from this area. Similar ~35-45% skeletal P/Ca decreases occur during the 1982-1983 and 1986-1987 El Niño events, which predate satellite color and regional nutrient measurements. After each El Niño event, nutrient increases lag temperature recovery by 4-12months, likely reflecting uptake by massive phytoplankton blooms that followed resumption of upwelling. The results support the utility of coral P/Ca to probe the mechanisms linking ENSO, equatorial upwelling, and carbon cycling in the past. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: NSF Chemical Oceanography # Grant: OCE 0752544 #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund # Grant: #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Australian Research Council Discovery Project # Grant: DP1092945 #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering Research Fellowship # Grant: #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering Research Awards # Grant: AINGRA09021 and ALNGRA10077 #--------------------------------------- # Site Information # Site_Name: Christmas Island Coral 2 # Northernmost_Latitude: 1.883333 # Southernmost_Latitude: 1.883333 # Easternmost_Longitude: -157.4 # Westernmost_Longitude: -157.4 # Elevation: -9 #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: Christmas-2 LaVigne2013 # First_Year: 1981 # Last_Year: 1988 # Time_Unit: AD # Core_Length: # Notes: #--------------------------------------- # Chronology: # Chronologies described in auxiliary material published with LaVigne et al., 2013. #--------------------------------------- # Variables ## year_AD ,year,,,AD,,,, ## P/Ca ,Phosphorus/Calcium ratio,,,µmol/mol,,Corals and Sclerosponges,, #---------------------------------------- # Data # Missing_Values: NA year_AD P/Ca 1981.00628571428 27.4087142952976 1981.07771428571 24.912966187197 1981.14914285714 22.2776556172603 1981.22057142857 22.1321268950377 1981.292 23.7599128727288 1981.33650588235 25.5630621713028 1981.3810117647 28.0164491753262 1981.47002352941 23.7502495695464 1981.51452941176 26.7326964495487 1981.55903529412 27.4358237950967 1981.60354117647 30.918430427822 1981.64804705882 30.2433543639461 1981.73705882353 28.6131862405023 1981.78156470588 24.1295637084771 1981.82607058823 26.0127869309619 1981.91508235294 23.031618748112 1981.95958823529 24.1656431665394 1982.00409411765 26.2781947862327 1982.08145 31.0994305586057 1982.1143 25.6918015192204 1982.18 22.8850749565627 1982.21285 23.7769819145718 1982.2457 25.2571360548772 1982.27855 22.1275523400005 1982.3114 22.5699180933855 1982.34425 26.4919927388184 1982.3771 19.9502613689123 1982.54415 14.9921724821103 1982.627675 14.4793490401618 1982.7112 11.6512041135632 1982.78375 20.2666304425608 1982.92885 16.6095861277397 1983.0014 15.1188744278649 1983.07395 23.7821289402115 1983.1465 16.8821698212071 1983.2916 17.0723194631445 1983.33666923077 17.9116068142579 1983.38173846154 23.1917578202722 1983.42680769231 24.2668499637046 1983.47187692308 20.217946713362 1983.56201538462 20.2475088865794 1983.60708461539 18.9614872478195 1983.65215384616 20.3487524308578 1983.69722307693 18.7530249161942 1983.78736153847 19.5957089213119 1983.83243076924 25.6419510222137 1983.8775 20.1111295073631 1984.045 16.1807373873804 1986.03163636364 24.0275253279441 1986.09957272728 20.5827937700085 1986.16750909091 18.4518547576747 1986.23544545455 21.0527707072441 1986.30338181819 18.8328441065797 1986.37131818182 17.2718918140765 1986.43925454546 14.3967399139804 1986.47322272728 14.1564163377952 1986.50719090909 14.6204846229009 1986.57512727273 12.839982170785 1986.64306363637 15.8675618682192 1986.711 15.9110368382721 1986.77838 14.3008850432793 1986.84576 23.330019794906 1986.91314 27.4466641506144 1986.98052 19.6074813685209 1987.0479 16.6901966312585 1987.0892 14.2980401254105 1987.10985 13.9743095687531 1987.1305 14.941847337607 1987.1718 13.5715865204319 1987.2131 15.5873865108575 1987.23375 14.411535489188 1987.2544 18.475597482538 1987.2957 14.0147226979653 1987.31635 11.7171356732215 1987.337 12.6038221465395 1987.3783 11.1695199707712 1987.4196 11.5402903406758 1987.4609 15.9260862069939 1987.5022 9.00934279988336 1987.5435 10.860709279275 1987.60422727273 11.7887913303558 1987.66495454546 12.4065472891158 1987.72568181819 12.2823833437765 1987.78640909091 14.2386834958204 1987.84713636364 10.7134603410945 1987.90786363637 13.1361973286587 1988.02931818182 12.8077152747921 1988.09004545455 14.9123975939558 1988.15077272728 13.8686483469764 1988.2115 16.1071046345952 1988.232025 16.2140016087555 1988.25255 15.160240760053 1988.273075 14.2749407989342 1988.2936 17.6953573431519 1988.40586666667 14.3380795655735 1988.51813333334 14.2694299187829
