Paleoceanographic reconstruction using d15N and d13C proxies can provide new insight beyond the instrumental record; however only a few sedimentary records from anoxic basins resolve decadal-scale ecosystem fluctuations, and multiple possible drivers of variability complicate interpretation of bulk d15N and d13C records. We addressed these challenges by applying bulk and compound-specific amino acid d15N and d13C analysis to two deep-sea bamboo coral archives with sub-decadal resolution collected from the central California margin, creating a record of past biogeochemical change spanning c. 1815 to present. Comparison of bamboo coral amino acid d15N and d13C results with sediment trap data and marine organic matter end members indicates that bamboo coral likely feed directly on exported sinking particles  . The sub-decadally resolved bulk d15N and d13C records suggest long-term ecosystem stability since the pre-industrial period, punctuated by multidecadal-scale fluctuations that coincide with local and basin-scale oceanographic variability during the 20th century. Compound-specific isotopes of amino acids reveal that bulk d13C variability is responsive to shifts in d13C of primary production, whereas bulk d15N variability is driven primarily by shifts in trophic position. In our record, high (low) coral trophic position and low (high) d13C of primary production occurred during negative (positive) phases of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation. These results imply low primary productivity occurred during periods of high nitrate availability, meaning primary production was decoupled from macronutrient supply. We hypothesize that physical mixing or precipitation-mediated changes in iron availability may link climate variability to phytoplankton productivity and ecosystem trophic structure at our study site. Understanding such relationships between climate forcing and ecosystem response is crucial for predicting future change under shifting climate regimes in California. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: US National Science Foundation # Grant: OCE 1635527 #--------------------------------------- # Site_Information # Site_Name: Sur Ridge # Location: Eastern Pacific Ocean # Northernmost_Latitude: 36.4 # Southernmost_Latitude: 36.4 # Easternmost_Longitude: -122.3 # Westernmost_Longitude: -122.3 # Elevation_m: -1250 #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: D621 and D639 AA d13C Guilderson2024 # First_Year: # Last_Year: # Time_Unit: # Core_Length_m: # Parameter_Keywords: carbon isotopes # Notes: Two samples collected via Doc Ricketts (ROV) D621 #1 and D639 #1 #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: # Radiocarbon values reflects that of recently exported surface particulate organic carbon.
