However, calibration studies using in situ data to assess the relative contributions of warming and freshening to coral d18O records are exceedingly rare. Furthermore, the fidelity of coral d18O records under the most severe thermal stress events is difficult to assess. Here, we present six coral d18O records and in situ temperature, salinity, and seawater d18O data from Kiritimati Island (2N, 157W) spanning the very strong 2015/16 El Nino event. Local sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies of +2.4+/-0.4C and seawater d18O anomalies of -0.19+/-0.02 per mil contribute to the observed coral d18O anomalies of -0.58+/-0.05 per mil, consistent with a ~70% contribution from SST and ~30% from seawater d18O. Our results demonstrate that Kiritimati coral d18O records can provide reliable reconstructions even during the largest class of El Nino events. #------------------ # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: US National Science Foundation # Grant: 1502832, 1658182, 1635068, 1836645, 1446343, 1446274 #------------------ # Site_Information # Site_Name: Kiritimati Island # Location: Ocean>Pacific Ocean>Central Pacific Ocean>Kiribati # Country: Republic of Kiribati # Northernmost_Latitude: 1.93 # Southernmost_Latitude: 1.93 # Easternmost_Longitude: -157.48 # Westernmost_Longitude: -157.48 # Elevation: -4 #------------------ # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: Kiritimati2021bottle-d18O # Earliest_Year: 1997 # Most_Recent_Year: 2017 # Time_Unit: Year CE # Core_Length: # Notes: #------------------ # Chronology_Information # Chronology: # #---------------- # Variables # # Data variables follow are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Data line variables format: one per line, shortname-tab-variable components (what, material, error, units, seasonality, data type,detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data, free text) # ## age_CE age, , , year Common Era, , instrumental, , ,N, ## d18O delta 18O, sea water,,per mil,,instrumental,,cavity ring-down spectroscopy,N, # #---------------- # Data: # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing_Values: # age_CE d18O 2016.9 0.375 2016.9 0.321 2016.9 0.314 2016.9 0.311 2016.9 0.362 2016.9 0.287 2016.9 0.325 2016.9 0.315 2016.9 0.432 2016.9 0.354 2016.9 0.229 2016.9 0.257 2016.9 0.202 2016.9 0.309 2016.9 0.287 2016.9 0.461 2016.88 0.242 2016.88 0.232 2016.88 0.257 2016.27 0.502 2016.27 0.452 2016.27 0.27 2016.27 0.265 2016.27 0.307 2016.27 0.174 2016.27 0.18 2016.27 0.321 2016.27 0.352 2016.27 0.328 2016.27 0.356 2016.27 0.304 2016.27 0.389 2016.27 0.387 2016.27 0.36 2015.88 0.242 2015.88 0.248 2015.88 0.282 2015.88 0.231 2015.88 0.264 2015.88 0.301 2015.88 0.301 2015.88 0.179 2015.88 0.394 2015.87 0.028 2015.87 0.124 2015.87 0.127 2015.87 0.149 2015.87 0.153 2015.87 0.143 2015.87 0.021 2015.87 0.063 2015.87 0.135 2015.87 0.066 2015.87 0.115 2015.87 0.151 2015.87 0.179 2015.87 0.222 2015.87 0.213 2015.87 0.262 2015.87 0.299 2015.87 0.316 2015.56 0.391 2015.56 0.374 2015.56 0.411 2015.56 0.466 2015.56 0.493 2015.56 0.439 2015.56 0.463 2015.56 0.43 2015.56 0.489 2015.56 0.425 2015.56 0.402 2015.54 0.501 2015.54 0.534 2015.54 0.53 2015.54 0.481 2015.54 0.426 2015.54 0.285 2015.54 0.228 2015.54 0.307 2015.54 0.291 2015.54 0.17 2015.54 0.173 2015.22 0.405 2015.22 0.47 2015.22 0.42 2015.22 0.455 2015.04 0.335 2015.02 0.31 2015 0.302 2014.98 0.336 2014.71 0.274 2014.71 0.313 2014.69 0.256 2014.69 0.28 2014.69 0.252 2014.69 0.468 2014.69 0.482 2014.68 0.325 2014.68 0.41 2014.68 0.423 1997.88 0.067 1997.88 0.124 1997.88 0.1 1997.88 0.082 1997.88 0.124 1997.88 0.056 1997.87 0.122 1997.87 0.134 1997.87 0.088 1997.87 0.142 1997.87 0.096 1997.87 0.14 1997.87 0.08 1997.87 0.052 1997.87 0.102 1997.86 0.166 1997.86 0.147 1997.86 0.156 1997.86 0.121 1997.86 0.226 1997.86 0.16 1997.86 0.15 1997.86 0.118 1997.85 0.087 1997.85 0.068 1997.85 0.045
