In this study, we present new records of annual skeletal density, linear extension and calcification rates for 16 Porites spp. coral cores from northeastern Hainan Island, northern South China Sea. Based on average growth characteristics from 1948 to 2001, P.lobata had significantly higher linear extension and calcification rates and lower density than P.lutea. We also found evidence of an age-related effect on growth, whereby skeletal density decreased and linear extension rate increased through time. This did not affect calcification rates. The average calcification rate for northeastern Hainan Island Porites matches that expected for Indo-Pacific Porites based on average sea surface temperatures (SST) from 1961 to 1990. After removal of the ontogenetic trends, average 16-core calcification rates from 1923 to 2002 showed an initial increase, matching observed SST warming. After 1982, however, calcification significantly decreased, although SST did not continue to warm. We suggest that the lower calcification rates from 1983 to 2002 may be a response to eutrophication of coastal waters as a result of extensive coastal aquaculture development. In summary, our new growth records from Hainan Island show that, despite species differences, calcification rates were typical of Indo-Pacific Porites but that in the latter half of the 20th Century, calcification rates have likely responded to both globally and locally induced changes in the marine climate experienced by the corals. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: # Grant: #--------------------------------------- # Site Information # Site_Name: Hainan Island # Location: South China Sea # Country: China # Northernmost_Latitude: 19.33 # Southernmost_Latitude: 19.3 # Easternmost_Longitude: 110.68 # Westernmost_Longitude: 110.67 # Elevation: #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: 0C033 Su2016 # First_Year: 1944 # Last_Year: 2002 # Time_Unit: AD # Core_Length: # Notes: #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: #--------------------------------------- # Variables # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-longname components (9 components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, archive, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) ## age_AD age,,,years AD,,,,,N ## ext-p.lut extension rate,Porites lutea,,cm/yr,annual,corals and sclerosponges,,,N ## dens-p.lut skeletal density,Porites lutea,,g cm-3,annual,corals and sclerosponges,,,N ## calcif-p.lut calcifiction,Porites lutea,,g cm-2 yr-1,annual,corals and sclerosponges,,,N #------------------------ # Data # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing Value: NA age_AD ext-p.lut skelden-p.lut calcif-p.lut 1944 1.300 1.131 1.471 1945 1.312 1.134 1.488 1946 1.239 1.153 1.429 1947 1.284 1.147 1.472 1948 1.065 1.153 1.229 1949 1.107 1.159 1.283 1950 1.107 1.130 1.252 1951 1.264 1.115 1.410 1952 1.116 1.129 1.260 1953 1.121 1.182 1.326 1954 1.146 1.174 1.345 1955 1.239 1.203 1.492 1956 1.207 1.205 1.454 1957 1.301 1.204 1.566 1958 1.270 1.194 1.517 1959 1.197 1.175 1.407 1960 1.261 1.207 1.522 1961 1.233 1.239 1.527 1962 1.338 1.277 1.709 1963 1.307 1.255 1.640 1964 1.426 1.243 1.772 1965 1.465 1.177 1.725 1966 1.474 1.217 1.794 1967 1.461 1.191 1.740 1968 1.319 1.194 1.575 1969 1.649 1.198 1.975 1970 1.512 1.178 1.781 1971 1.419 1.157 1.641 1972 1.343 1.124 1.509 1973 1.279 1.144 1.463 1974 1.409 1.133 1.596 1975 1.411 1.138 1.605 1976 1.527 1.136 1.734 1977 1.628 1.103 1.795 1978 1.643 1.095 1.800 1979 1.801 1.088 1.959 1980 1.760 1.079 1.899 1981 1.536 1.094 1.681 1982 1.279 1.099 1.406 1983 1.332 1.072 1.427 1984 1.552 1.043 1.620 1985 1.739 1.041 1.810 1986 1.858 1.038 1.928 1987 1.720 1.035 1.781 1988 1.600 0.998 1.596 1989 1.749 1.007 1.762 1990 1.528 0.961 1.468 1991 1.600 0.992 1.588 1992 1.632 0.966 1.576 1993 1.538 0.954 1.467 1994 1.599 0.962 1.538 1995 1.566 0.917 1.436 1996 1.471 0.938 1.380 1997 1.524 0.895 1.365 1998 1.559 0.889 1.386 1999 1.385 0.903 1.251 2000 1.513 0.928 1.404 2001 1.721 0.854 1.469 2002 1.487 0.930 1.383
