In this study, we present new records of annual skeletal density, linear extension and calcification rates for 16 Porites spp. coral cores from northeastern Hainan Island, northern South China Sea. Based on average growth characteristics from 1948 to 2001, P.lobata had significantly higher linear extension and calcification rates and lower density than P.lutea. We also found evidence of an age-related effect on growth, whereby skeletal density decreased and linear extension rate increased through time. This did not affect calcification rates. The average calcification rate for northeastern Hainan Island Porites matches that expected for Indo-Pacific Porites based on average sea surface temperatures (SST) from 1961 to 1990. After removal of the ontogenetic trends, average 16-core calcification rates from 1923 to 2002 showed an initial increase, matching observed SST warming. After 1982, however, calcification significantly decreased, although SST did not continue to warm. We suggest that the lower calcification rates from 1983 to 2002 may be a response to eutrophication of coastal waters as a result of extensive coastal aquaculture development. In summary, our new growth records from Hainan Island show that, despite species differences, calcification rates were typical of Indo-Pacific Porites but that in the latter half of the 20th Century, calcification rates have likely responded to both globally and locally induced changes in the marine climate experienced by the corals. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: # Grant: #--------------------------------------- # Site Information # Site_Name: Hainan Island # Location: South China Sea # Country: China # Northernmost_Latitude: 19.33 # Southernmost_Latitude: 19.3 # Easternmost_Longitude: 110.68 # Westernmost_Longitude: 110.67 # Elevation: #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: QG043 Su2016 # First_Year: 1928 # Last_Year: 2003 # Time_Unit: AD # Core_Length: # Notes: #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: #--------------------------------------- # Variables # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-longname components (9 components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, archive, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) ## age_AD age,,,years AD,,,,,N ## ext-p.lob extension rate,Porites lobata,,cm/yr,annual,corals and sclerosponges,,,N ## dens-p.lob skeletal density,Porites lobata,,g cm-3,annual,corals and sclerosponges,,,N ## calcif-p.lob calcifiction,Porites lobata,,g cm-2 yr-1,annual,corals and sclerosponges,,,N #------------------------ # Data # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing Value: NA age_AD ext-p.lob skelden-p.lob calcif-p.lob 1928 1.422 1.088 1.547 1929 1.249 1.060 1.323 1930 1.604 1.048 1.681 1931 1.638 1.055 1.728 1932 1.808 1.038 1.876 1933 1.586 1.002 1.589 1934 1.770 0.984 1.742 1935 1.587 0.941 1.493 1936 1.544 0.949 1.465 1937 1.826 0.922 1.683 1938 1.507 0.931 1.403 1939 1.665 0.903 1.502 1940 1.579 0.923 1.458 1941 1.699 0.948 1.611 1942 1.525 0.949 1.447 1943 1.523 0.965 1.470 1944 1.447 0.948 1.372 1945 1.479 0.982 1.452 1946 1.762 0.933 1.644 1947 1.548 0.910 1.409 1948 1.513 0.887 1.342 1949 1.789 0.899 1.609 1950 1.692 0.890 1.505 1951 1.674 0.888 1.487 1952 1.654 0.897 1.483 1953 1.585 0.890 1.410 1954 1.480 0.878 1.300 1955 1.739 0.863 1.501 1956 1.660 0.837 1.389 1957 1.770 0.798 1.412 1958 1.571 0.888 1.395 1959 1.693 0.934 1.582 1960 1.712 0.955 1.635 1961 1.638 0.989 1.620 1962 1.617 1.008 1.630 1963 1.587 0.970 1.539 1964 1.555 0.959 1.492 1965 1.770 0.944 1.672 1966 1.734 0.921 1.598 1967 1.954 0.900 1.758 1968 1.857 0.915 1.698 1969 1.746 0.911 1.590 1970 1.584 0.901 1.427 1971 1.607 0.909 1.461 1972 1.729 0.936 1.617 1973 1.611 0.945 1.523 1974 1.754 0.943 1.654 1975 1.687 0.936 1.579 1976 1.821 0.906 1.650 1977 1.901 0.896 1.704 1978 1.827 0.858 1.568 1979 1.767 0.877 1.550 1980 2.009 0.895 1.797 1981 1.735 0.894 1.550 1982 1.836 0.914 1.677 1983 1.544 0.931 1.437 1984 1.708 0.904 1.544 1985 1.706 0.888 1.515 1986 1.700 0.880 1.496 1987 1.943 0.895 1.740 1988 1.739 0.853 1.483 1989 1.873 0.846 1.585 1990 1.864 0.831 1.549 1991 2.054 0.853 1.752 1992 1.641 0.854 1.401 1993 1.975 0.881 1.739 1994 1.926 0.867 1.670 1995 1.611 0.880 1.417 1996 1.696 0.858 1.455 1997 1.559 0.897 1.398 1998 1.685 0.889 1.498 1999 1.639 0.883 1.448 2000 1.593 0.880 1.402 2001 1.624 0.882 1.432 2002 1.597 0.833 1.330 2003 1.486 0.829 1.231
