In this study, we present new records of annual skeletal density, linear extension and calcification rates for 16 Porites spp. coral cores from northeastern Hainan Island, northern South China Sea. Based on average growth characteristics from 1948 to 2001, P.lobata had significantly higher linear extension and calcification rates and lower density than P.lutea. We also found evidence of an age-related effect on growth, whereby skeletal density decreased and linear extension rate increased through time. This did not affect calcification rates. The average calcification rate for northeastern Hainan Island Porites matches that expected for Indo-Pacific Porites based on average sea surface temperatures (SST) from 1961 to 1990. After removal of the ontogenetic trends, average 16-core calcification rates from 1923 to 2002 showed an initial increase, matching observed SST warming. After 1982, however, calcification significantly decreased, although SST did not continue to warm. We suggest that the lower calcification rates from 1983 to 2002 may be a response to eutrophication of coastal waters as a result of extensive coastal aquaculture development. In summary, our new growth records from Hainan Island show that, despite species differences, calcification rates were typical of Indo-Pacific Porites but that in the latter half of the 20th Century, calcification rates have likely responded to both globally and locally induced changes in the marine climate experienced by the corals. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: # Grant: #--------------------------------------- # Site Information # Site_Name: Hainan Island # Location: South China Sea # Country: China # Northernmost_Latitude: 19.33 # Southernmost_Latitude: 19.3 # Easternmost_Longitude: 110.68 # Westernmost_Longitude: 110.67 # Elevation: #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: QG5 Su2016 # First_Year: 1948 # Last_Year: 2001 # Time_Unit: AD # Core_Length: # Notes: #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: #--------------------------------------- # Variables # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-longname components (9 components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, archive, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) ## age_AD age,,,years AD,,,,,N ## ext-p.lut extension rate,Porites lutea,,cm/yr,annual,corals and sclerosponges,,,N ## dens-p.lut skeletal density,Porites lutea,,g cm-3,annual,corals and sclerosponges,,,N ## calcif-p.lut calcifiction,Porites lutea,,g cm-2 yr-1,annual,corals and sclerosponges,,,N #------------------------ # Data # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing Value: NA age_AD ext-p.lut skelden-p.lut calcif-p.lut 1948 0.475 1.281 0.609 1949 0.483 1.345 0.650 1950 0.575 1.266 0.728 1951 0.616 1.373 0.846 1952 0.620 1.264 0.784 1953 0.664 1.364 0.905 1954 0.617 1.500 0.926 1955 0.702 1.425 1.000 1956 0.721 1.402 1.011 1957 0.650 1.334 0.867 1958 0.722 1.335 0.964 1959 0.741 1.387 1.028 1960 0.728 1.392 1.013 1961 0.798 1.342 1.072 1962 0.762 1.334 1.017 1963 0.707 1.340 0.948 1964 0.794 1.236 0.982 1965 0.751 1.299 0.976 1966 0.796 1.373 1.093 1967 0.764 1.363 1.041 1968 0.792 1.362 1.079 1969 0.760 1.379 1.048 1970 0.785 1.392 1.093 1971 0.745 1.373 1.022 1972 0.809 1.412 1.142 1973 0.808 1.428 1.154 1974 0.793 1.405 1.115 1975 0.812 1.373 1.114 1976 0.911 1.421 1.294 1977 0.901 1.392 1.255 1978 0.870 1.406 1.223 1979 0.891 1.430 1.274 1980 0.968 1.337 1.295 1981 0.956 1.350 1.290 1982 0.903 1.364 1.232 1983 0.813 1.285 1.044 1984 0.853 1.338 1.141 1985 0.878 1.397 1.227 1986 0.918 1.364 1.251 1987 0.955 1.283 1.226 1988 0.823 1.264 1.040 1989 0.743 1.226 0.911 1990 0.789 1.217 0.960 1991 0.878 1.129 0.992 1992 0.817 1.185 0.968 1993 0.918 1.246 1.143 1994 0.944 1.236 1.167 1995 0.844 1.169 0.986 1996 0.830 1.169 0.971 1997 0.901 1.247 1.124 1998 0.870 1.218 1.060 1999 0.875 1.214 1.062 2000 0.878 1.153 1.013 2001 0.676 1.001 0.676
