Samples are put in weighed and numbered crucibles and # placed in an oven at 100 degrees C overnight to dry them out. Sample and crucible are # then weighed and returned to the oven to be heated at 550 decrees C for an hour. Samples # are cooled and weighed in the crucibles. This process is repeated one more time at # 1000 degrees C. Using the differences in sample weights, the mass lost during the # 550 degrees C treatment is organic mass, and the mass lost during the 1000 degrees C # heating is carbonate mass. The mass that is not burned off is clay, silica or other # non organic, non carbonate minerals. # # Location description: Big Fish Lake is found in the Ortonville Recreation Area (state park) in a deciduous # park. It is situated outside the Saginawa Lobe moraine (E of), and is of lacustrine # natural open water glacial origin. # Very fresh water lake during lateglacial time; ostracodes present (Cytherissa # lacustris) alternating with charophytes. Much of Big Fish lake sediments are gray # clay with many fine black laminations that disappear upon exposure to air.
