The frequency of extreme wildfire weather will increase with continued warming, but many uncertainties still exist about future fire regimes, including how the risk of large fires will persist as vegetation changes. Past fire-climate relationships provide an opportunity to constrain the related uncertainties, and reveal widespread burning across large regions of western North America during past warm intervals. Whether such episodes also burned large portions of individual landscapes has been difficult to determine, however, because uncertainties with the ages of past fires and limited spatial resolution often prohibit specific estimates of past area burned. Accounting for these challenges in a subalpine landscape in Colorado, we estimated century-scale fire synchroneity across 12 lakesediment charcoal records spanning the past 2,000 y. The percentage of sites burned only deviated from the historic range of variability during the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) between 1,200 and 850 y B.P., when temperatures were similar to recent decades. Between 1,130 and 1,030 y B.P., 83% (median estimate) of our sites burned when temperatures increased ~0.5 degrees C relative to the preceding centuries. Lake-based fire rotation during the MCA decreased to an estimated 120 y, representing a 260% higher rate of burning than during the period of dendroecological sampling (360 to -60 y B.P.). Increased burning, however, did not persist throughout the MCA. Burning declined abruptly before temperatures cooled, indicating possible fuel limitations to continued burning. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: National Science Foundation # Grant: BCS-0845129 #--------------------------------------- # Site Information # Site_Name: Teal Lake # Location: Colorado # Country: United States of America # Northernmost_Latitude: 40.583 # Southernmost_Latitude: 40.583 # Easternmost_Longitude: -106.608 # Westernmost_Longitude: -106.608 # Elevation: 2689 #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: USPTL001 CHAR # First_Year: 1837 # Last_Year: -61 # Time_Unit: cal yr BP # Core_Length: # Notes: #--------------------------------------- # Chronology: # Age model generated with the R package Bchron # Depth (cm) Lab Number Material Age (14C BP BP +/-1Sigma ) # 25.5 Sediment surface # 66-67 UCIAMS-138632 Charcoal 340+/-20 # 92-93 UCIAMS-138630 Charcoal 1005+/-20 # 111-113 UCIAMS-138637 Charcoal 1340+/-20 # 121-123 UCIAMS-102569 Charcoal 1895+/-20 # #--------------------------------------- # Variables # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-longname components (9 components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, archive, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) ## depth-cm-top depth,,,cm,,,top depth,,N ## depth-cm-bottom depth,,,cm,,,bottom depth,,N ## age-calBP-top age,,,calendar years BP,,Fire History,top of sample,,N ## age-calBP-bottom age,,,calendar years BP,,Fire History,top of sample,,N ## vol-wetsed volume,wet sediment,,ml,,Fire History,used for charcoal counts,,N ## char>125um charcoal,,,counts,,Fire History,>125 um,,N #------------------------ # Data # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing Value: n/a depth-cm-top depth-cm-bottom age-calBP-top age-calBP-bottom vol-wetsed char>125um 25.5 26 -61 -55 1 2 26 27 -55 -44 1 1 27 28 -44 -32 1 3 28 29 -32 -21 1 2 29 30 -21 -10 1 0 30 31 -10 2 1 2 31 32 2 13 1 6 32 33 13 24 1 6 33 34 24 35 1 5 34 35 35 47 1 4 35 36 47 58 1 3 36 37 58 69 1 16 37 38 69 80 1 7 38 39 80 91 1 1 39 40 91 102 1 3 40 41 102 113 3 36 41 42 113 125 3 138 42 43 125 135.5 3 81 43 44 135.5 147 3 8 44 45 147 158 3 18 45 46 158 169 3 10 46 47 169 180 3 8 47 48 180 191 3 5 48 49 191 202 3 5 49 50 202 213 3 2 50 51 213 224 3 2 51 52 224 235 3 1 52 53 235 245 3 4 53 54 245 256 3 10 54 55 256 266.5 3 23 55 56 266.5 278 3 15 56 57 278 288 3 14 57 58 288 298 3 7 58 59 298 308 3 31 59 60 308 318 3 28 60 61 318 328 3 20 61 62 328 338 3 34 62 63 338 349 3 30 63 64 349 361 3 54 64 65 361 373 3 44 65 66 373 392 3 84 66 67 392 419 3 186 67 68 419 442 3 114 68 69 442 462 3 15 69 70 462 480 3 9 70 71 480 499 3 13 71 72 499 518.5 3 33 72 73 518.5 538 3 4 73 74 538 557 3 2 74 75 557 577 1 1 75 76 577 597 3 0 76 77 597 617 3 4 77 78 617 638 3 11 78 79 638 659 3 2 79 80 659 680 3 2 80 81 680 701 3 30 81 82 701 722 3 41 82 83 722 743 3 18 83 84 743 763 3 17 84 85 763 784 3 13 85 86 784 805 3 29 86 87 805 825 3 11 87 88 825 846 3 11 88 89 846 867 3 7 89 90 867 887 3 3 90 91 887 908 3 9 91 92 908 929 3 49 92 93 929 948 3 96 93 94 948 966 3 14 94 95 966 985 3 14 95 96 985 1003 3 19 96 97 1003 1022 3 10 97 98 1022 1040 3 9 98 99 1040 1059 3 51 99 100 1059 1078 3 25 100 101 1078 1096 3 73 101 102 1096 1115 3 37 102 103 1115 1133 3 29 103 104 1133 1152 3 30 104 105 1152 1171 3 37 105 106 1171 1189 3 91 106 107 1189 1207 3 61 107 108 1207 1225 3 30 108 109 1225 1244 3 54 109 110 1244 1263 3 51 110 111 1263 1284 3 60 111 112 1284 1335 3 66 112 113 1335 1393 3 79 113 114 1393 1449 3 53 114 115 1449 1506 3 59 115 116 1506 1563 3 45 116 117 1563 1620 3 52 117 118 1620 1677 3 40 118 119 1677 1733 3 38 119 120 1733 1789 3 45 120 121 1789 1837 3 27
