Collins, CO # # Fire scar data from this site are available in FHX2 format at: # ftp://ftp.ncdc.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/firehistory/firescar/northamerica/us202001.fhx # along with associated metadata at: # ftp://ftp.ncdc.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/firehistory/firescar/northamerica/us202001.txt # and an accompanying site chronology diagram at: # ftp://ftp.ncdc.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/firehistory/firescar/northamerica/diagrams/us202001.gif # # Methods: See Brown, P.M. 2001. Increment cores were removed from # approximately 10 cm height above ground level on living trees and cross # sections were cut from stumps, logs, and snags such that one surface was # at an estimated 10 cm height above root crown. Cores sampled had to be # no more than a field-estimated 10 years from pith. On increment cores # or cross sections that did not include pith but inside ring curvature # was visible, pith dates were estimated using overlaid concentric circles # of varying diameters that take into account both average inside ring # widths and an estimated distance to pith. # # Reference: Brown, P.M. 2001. Landscape Age Structure of Ponderosa Pine # Stands, Limestone Plateau, Black Hills National Forest: Final Report. # USDA Forest Service, Report CSS-11020399-23. # A PDF copy of the text from this report is available at: # ftp://ftp.ngdc.noaa.gov/paleo/firehistory/firescar/northamerica/supplemental/BH_AGE_finalreport_text.PDF # A PDF copy of the figures from this report is avaialbe at: # ftp://ftp.ngdc.noaa.gov/paleo/firehistory/firescar/northamerica/supplemental/BH_AGE_finalreport_figures.PDF # # Comments: Twenty-seven of 30 trees were dated from this plot. Trees fell # into two distinct groups for the most part, from 1622 to 1642 and from # 1770 to 1778. There was one tree (snag) that extended back to the early # 1500s but did not have pith. Fires were very frequent in this stand in # the latter 1800s, and there was the pronounced gap in fire scars during # the early 1700s similar to the Jewel Cave sites just to the north (Brown # and Sieg 1996). # 1 Tree ID 2 Year 3 Feature 1,1540,earliest ring 1,1845,fire scar undetermined 1,1846,last ring 2,1793,pith 2,1822,fire scar undetermined 2,1974,last ring 3,1777,pith 3,1874,last ring 4,1786,pith 4,1808,fire scar dormant postition 4,1988,bark 7,1630,pith 7,1830,last ring 8,1629,pith 8,1672,fire scar latewood 8,1684,fire scar dormant postition 8,1711,last ring 9,1635,pith 9,1672,fire scar latewood 9,1785,fire scar latter earlywood 9,1822,fire scar latewood 9,1845,fire scar latewood 9,1856,fire scar latter earlywood 9,1863,fire scar undetermined 9,1870,fire scar undetermined 9,1871,last ring 10,1636,pith 10,1672,fire scar latewood 10,1684,fire scar undetermined 10,1822,fire scar latewood 10,1834,last ring 11,1642,pith 11,1652,fire scar middle earlywood 11,1672,fire scar undetermined 11,1673,last ring 12,1630,pith 12,1672,fire scar undetermined 12,1845,fire scar undetermined 12,1846,last ring 13,1776,pith 13,1785,fire scar latter earlywood 13,1949,bark 14,1634,pith 14,1750,fire scar dormant postition 14,1763,fire scar latewood 14,1785,fire scar middle earlywood 14,1802,fire scar latter earlywood 14,1822,fire scar latewood 14,1845,fire scar latter earlywood 14,1856,fire scar latter earlywood 14,1870,fire scar undetermined 14,1871,last ring 15,1622,pith 15,1631,fire scar undetermined 15,1672,fire scar dormant postition 15,1684,fire scar dormant postition 15,1802,fire scar dormant postition 15,1845,fire scar undetermined 15,1856,fire scar undetermined 15,1890,fire scar undetermined 15,1891,last ring 16,1635,pith 16,1822,fire scar undetermined 16,1845,fire scar latter earlywood 16,1856,fire scar latewood 16,1863,fire scar undetermined 16,1870,fire scar undetermined 16,1871,last ring 17,1623,pith 17,1854,last ring 18,1775,pith 18,2000,bark 19,1770,pith 19,1822,fire scar latewood 19,2000,bark 20,1777,pith 20,2000,bark 21,1777,pith 21,2000,bark 22,1635,pith 22,1672,fire scar latewood 22,1684,fire scar dormant postition 22,1697,fire scar middle earlywood 22,1763,fire scar latter earlywood 22,1785,fire scar middle earlywood 22,1802,fire scar dormant postition 22,1822,fire scar latter earlywood 22,1845,fire scar undetermined 22,1856,fire scar undetermined 22,1870,fire scar latewood 22,1890,fire scar undetermined 22,1891,last ring 23,1661,pith 23,1672,fire scar dormant postition 23,1697,fire scar undetermined 23,1748,last ring 24,1774,pith 24,2000,bark 25,1777,pith 25,2000,bark 26,1777,pith 26,2000,bark 27,1802,pith 27,2000,bark 28,1812,last ring 28,1822,fire scar undetermined 28,2000,bark 30,1628,pith 30,1672,fire scar latewood 30,1684,fire scar undetermined 30,1785,fire scar undetermined 30,1798,last ring
