Comments: Twenty-nine of 30 sampled from the plot were crossdated.
The majority of trees were living; several others were stumps with bark
dates of 1984 (1), 1990 (4), and 1995 (1).  Almost all of the living
trees and stumps had pith dates in the late 1700s (1774 to 1796),
with a pith date on one living tree of 1851.  Two other snags had pith
dates of 1718 and 1727, another snag had pith date of 1604, and the only
log collected from the plot extended from 1398 (inside date, not pith)
to 1856.  None of the trees dating through the middle 1700s exhibited
growth releases or suppressions.  Few fire scars were recorded on trees
in the stand, but include regional dates of 1743, 1845, 1863, and 1890.
One tree from this stand also recorded one of the few 1910 fire scars
found in the Black Hills.

Time spans of trees are represented by horizontal lines with dates of fire 
scars marked by inverted triangles. Dashed lines are estimated number of 
years to pith.  Vertical lines to left on tree chronologies are pith dates 
with inside dates (i.e., unknown number of years to pith) marked by slanted 
lines.  Vertical lines to right on tree chronologies are bark dates (= death 
dates) with outside dates (i.e., unknown number of years to death date) 
marked by slanted lines.  Note that x-axis varies on chronologies.

Fire History Graphs: Fire History Graphs illustrate specific years when 
fires occurred and how many trees were scarred. They are available in both 
PDF and PNG formats. The graphs consist of 2 parts, both of which show the 
X axis (time line) at the bottom with the earliest year of information on 
the left and the latest on the right.
The Fire Index Plot is the topmost plot, and shows two variables: sample 
depth (the number of recording trees in each year) as a blue line along 
the left Y axis, compared with the percent trees scarred shown as gray bars 
along the right Y axis.
Below, the Fire Chronology Plot consists of horizontal lines representing
injuries by year on individual sampled trees. Symbols are overlain that 
denote the years containing the dendrochronologically-dated fire scars or
injuries. The sample ID of each tree is displayed to the right of each
line. The Composite Axis below represents the composite information from
all individual series. The symbols used to represent the fire scars or
injuries, and the filters used to determine the composite information,
are shown in the legend.
