Fire and vegetation history in the eastern Cascade Mountains, Washington. Ecological Applications 14(2): 443-459. Abstract: Our objective was to document the fire history and to characterize the fire regime of the Teanaway River valley in central Washington State. We reconstructed a multicentury history of fire frequency, size, season and severity from 257 fire-scarred cross sections. The 30,000 ha watershed was sampled roughly on the township/range/section grid (one 0.5-2.5 ha plot per 260 ha; 92 sites) with 1-6 cross sections collected at each site. The sample area is representative of ponderosa pine/Douglas-fir/grand fir-dominated forest types in the Washington Cascades. Comments: Each fire history site represents the composite of several samples from a 0.5-2.5 ha plot area. Establishment data in conjunction with fire scar dates from adjacent sites were used to fill in grid cells where no fire scars were found. Most cross sections were from stumps created in the early 1900's. Most samples were ponderosa pine, with some Douglas-fir and occasional lodgepole pine, western white pine, western larch and western redcedar. On October 23, 2017, the Sample Storage location information above was changed at the request of Clinton S. Fire History Graphs: Fire History Graphs illustrate specific years when fires occurred and how many trees were scarred. They are available in both PDF and PNG formats. The graphs consist of 2 parts, both of which show the X axis (time line) at the bottom with the earliest year of information on the left and the latest on the right. The Fire Index Plot is the topmost plot, and shows two variables: sample depth (the number of recording trees in each year) as a blue line along the left Y axis, compared with the percent trees scarred shown as gray bars along the right Y axis. Below, the Fire Chronology Plot consists of horizontal lines representing injuries by year on individual sampled trees. Symbols are overlain that denote the years containing the dendrochronologically-dated fire scars or injuries. The sample ID of each tree is displayed to the right of each line. The Composite Axis below represents the composite information from all individual series. The symbols used to represent the fire scars or injuries, and the filters used to determine the composite information, are shown in the legend. These graphs were created using the Fire History Analysis and Exploration System (FHAES). See http://www.fhaes.org for more information.
