Most prominent in the new record is a significant depletion in d13C(atm) of 0.5per mil occurring during marine isotope stage (MIS) 4, followed by an enrichment of the same magnitude at the beginning of MIS 3. Such a significant excursion in the record is otherwise only observed at glacial terminations, suggesting that similar processes were at play, such as changing sea surface temperatures, changes in marine biological export in the Southern Ocean (SO) due to variations in aeolian iron fluxes, changes in the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, upwelling of deep water in the SO, and long-term trends in terrestrial carbon storage. Based on previous modeling studies, we propose constraints on some of these processes during specific time intervals. The decrease in d13C(atm) at the end of MIS 4 starting approximately 64 kyr B.P. was accompanied by increasing [CO2]. This period is also marked by a decrease in aeolian iron flux to the SO, followed by an increase in SO upwelling during Heinrich event 6, indicating that it is likely that a large amount of d13C-depleted carbon was transferred to the deep oceans previously, i.e., at the onset of MIS 4. Apart from the upwelling event at the end of MIS 4 (and potentially smaller events during Heinrich events in MIS 3), upwelling of deep water in the SO remained reduced until the last glacial termination, whereupon a second pulse of isotopically light carbon was released into the atmosphere. #------------------ # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Swiss National Science Foundation # Grant: #------------------ # Site_Information # Site_Name: EPICA Dronning Maud Land # Location: Antarctica # Country: # Northernmost_Latitude: -75.002500 # Southernmost_Latitude: -75.002500 # Easternmost_Longitude: 0.068400 # Westernmost_Longitude: 0.068400 # Elevation: 2891.7 m #------------------ # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: Eggleston2016EDMLiso # Earliest_Year: 64651 # Most_Recent_Year: 34064 # Time_Unit: Cal. year BP # Core_Length: 2774.15 m # #------------------ # Chronology_Information # Chronology: AICC2012 (Bazin et al., 2013; Veres et al., 2013) # #---------------- # Variables # # Data variables follow are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Data line variables format: Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-longname-tab-longname components (9 components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, archive, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) # ## depth_m depth,,,m,,,measured from top of core,,N ## age_gas_calBP age gas, , , calendar years before present (1950AD), , , AICC2012 age scale, ,N ## d13CO2 delta13C, carbon dioxide, , per mil, ,ice cores, corrected for gravitational fractionation, ,N ## d13CO2std delta13C standard deviation, carbon dioxide, , per mil, ,ice cores, , ,N ## d15N2 delta15N2,air,,permil,,,,,N ## d15N2std d15N2 standard deviation of replicate measurements,air,,permil,,,,,N ## numanal number of analyses,,,number of data points averaged,,,,N ## flag error flag,,,,,,0 = good; 1 = error,,N ## notes notes - reference,,,,,,1 = this study (sublimation); 2 = Schneider (2011) (sublimation),,N # #---------------- # Data: # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing Values: nan # depth_m age_gas_calBP d13CO2 d13CO2std d15N2 d15N2std numanal flag notes 1262.25 34064 -6.25 0.049 0.37 0.007 2 1 1 1276.51 34955 -6.49 nan 0.36 nan 1 0 1 1288.485 35625 -6.56 nan 0.36 nan 1 0 1 1298.815 36084 -6.52 nan 0.38 nan 1 0 1 1324.515 37484 -6.98 nan 0.38 nan 1 1 1 1336.805 38164 -6.44 nan 0.39 nan 1 0 1 1348.835 38680 -6.48 nan 0.39 nan 1 0 1 1384.515 40431 -6.26 nan 0.36 nan 1 1 1 1395.385 41033 -6.51 nan 0.36 nan 1 0 1 1431.405 42967 -6.51 nan 0.38 nan 1 0 1 1444.505 43759 -6.31 nan 0.37 nan 1 1 1 1455.545 44577 -6.51 nan 0.38 nan 1 0 1 1459.525 44845 -6.48 nan 0.37 nan 1 0 1 1466.415 45309 -6.53 nan 0.38 nan 1 0 1 1471.525 45611 -6.43 nan 0.39 nan 1 1 1 1480.205 46139 -6.56 nan 0.39 nan 1 0 1 1483.525 46358 -6.72 nan 0.39 nan 1 0 1 1491.535 46848 -6.48 nan 0.39 nan 1 0 1 1495.525 47087 -6.35 nan 0.37 nan 1 0 1 1563.83 51778 -6.54 0.014 0.39 0.003 2 0 1 1600.855 54113 -6.71 nan 0.4 nan 1 0 1 1636.865 56547 -7.01 nan 0.37 nan 1 0 1 1659.865 58094 -6.97 nan 0.4 nan 1 0 1 1695.815 60103 -6.89 0.049 0.38 0.011 2 0 1 1718.865 61552 -6.89 nan 0.43 nan 1 0 1 1755.895 64651 -6.85 nan 0.42 nan 1 1 1
