We present a new set of isotope measurements of N2O in air extracted from ice cores covering the last 3,000 years. For the preindustrial (PI) atmosphere, we find an average N2O mole fraction of (267 ± 1) nmol/mol and average tropospheric N2O isotopic values of d15NavPI = (9.5 ± 0.1)permil, d18OPI = (47.1 ± 0.2)permil, d15NalphaPI = (17.8 ± 0.4)permil, and d15NBetaPI = (1.2 ± 0.4)permil. From PI to modern times all isotope signatures decreased with a total change of d15Nav = (-2.7 ± 0.2)permil, d18O = (-2.5 ± 0.4)permil, d15Nalpha = (-2.0 ± 0.7)permil, and d15NBeta (-3.5 ± 0.7)permil. Interestingly, the temporal evolution is not the same for d15Nav and d18O. d18O trends are relatively larger during the early part, and d15Nav trends are larger during the late part of the industrial period, implying a decoupling of sources over the industrial period. Using a mass balance model, we determined the isotopic composition of the total average N2O source. Assuming that the total present source is the sum of a constant natural source and an increasing anthropogenic source, this anthropogenic source has an isotopic signature of d15Navsource,anthrop = (-15.0 ± 2.6)permil, d18Osource,anthrop = (30.0 ± 2.6)permil, d15Nalphasource,anthrop = (-4.5 ± 1.7)permil, and d15NBetasource,anthrop = (-24.0 ± 8.4)permil. The 15N site preference of the source has increased since PI times, which is indicative of a relative shift from denitrification to nitrification sources, consistent with agricultural emissions playing a major role in the N2O increase. #------------------ # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Dutch Science Foundation (NWO) # Grant: 851.30.020, 865.07.001 #------------------ # Site_Information # Site_Name: North Eemian Ice Drilling Programme (NEEM) # Location: North America>Greenland # Country: # Northernmost_Latitude: 77.45 # Southernmost_Latitude: 77.45 # Easternmost_Longitude: -51.06 # Westernmost_Longitude: -51.06 # Elevation: 2450 m #------------------ # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: NEEM2018N2Oiso # Earliest_Year: -689 # Most_Recent_Year: 1941 # Time_Unit: CE # Core_Length: # Notes: #------------------ # Chronology_Information # Chronology: # #---------------- # Variables # # Data variables follow are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Data line variables format: one per line, shortname-tab-variable components (what, material, error, units, seasonality, data type,detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data, free text) # ## depth_mm depth, , , mm, , , , ,N, ## age_AD age, , , AD, , , , ,N, ## d15Ncorr delta 15N, nitrous oxide, , per mil, ,ice cores,corrected,continuous-flow isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS),N,gravity corrected ## d18Ocorr delta 18O, nitrous oxide, , per mil, ,ice cores,corrected,continuous-flow isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS),N,gravity corrected ## d15Nacorr delta 15Nalpha, nitrous oxide, , per mil, ,ice cores,corrected,continuous-flow isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS),N,gravity corrected ## d15Nbcorr delta 15Nbeta, nitrous oxide, , per mil, ,ice cores,corrected,continuous-flow isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS),N,gravity corrected ## MoleFrac Mole fraction, , , , , , , ,N, # #---------------- # Data: # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing Values: # depth_mm age_AD d15Ncorr d18Ocorr d15Nacorr d15Nbcorr MoleFrac 574.75 -689 9.687980096 46.74532001 14.59855483 4.777405366 237.9116744 -293 9.138104162 47.0639426 16.11400882 2.162199505 242 473.55 -94 9.869635443 49.22944848 16.25714242 3.48212847 245 466.4 -54 9.791808141 44.9114953 12.49072271 7.092893571 249.813277 444.95 68 10.39451631 50.65851449 17.28539791 3.503634719 269.1564655 437.8 110 9.291420377 49.28880245 15.93844057 2.64440018 267 431.2 147 9.229866698 46.24107863 15.59673748 2.862995913 267 424.05 187 10.78881476 47.85357496 16.76565296 4.811976572 260.774529 409.2 268 8.580765186 49.3649244 18.55008337 -1.388552995 255.1620263 402.05 305 9.401621646 46.90737317 19.18628231 -0.383039018 260 394.35 346 10.59279032 45.15413427 18.85747749 2.328103153 273.0655328 387.2 387 10.75423685 45.94607858 16.69421867 4.814255037 258.5892076 372.35 469 9.092160002 46.15443097 17.30324426 0.88107574 255.6736644 364.65 510 9.436301656 45.88149654 21.0848255 -2.212222192 255.416414 348.7 596 10.05969801 46.49542314 20.83448399 -0.715087978 257.30315 325.6 720 9.255230055 43.89056696 17.15100563 1.359454484 254.7196284 301.95 842 9.091749663 51.20671387 18.61118259 -0.427683263 269.3569354 285.45 928 8.396340336 47.06760957 17.791112 -0.998431327 267 278.3 964 8.122404752 47.25123426 18.44314738 -2.198337879 266.4169314 261.25 1052 9.688836191 46.18296592 18.07048999 1.307182396 264.6897191 245.3 1132 8.665298755 48.11306006 12.03256994 5.298027571 260 237.05 1173 10.50928262 46.87314567 18.26624692 2.75231832 250.5018463 220 1261 9.115084123 46.65758773 17.95507709 0.275091157 255 203.5 1341 9.879298617 46.41615385 17.50667378 2.251923453 270.7683539 194.7 1384 9.181493262 48.28687295 17.4658837 0.89710282 254.328608 177.1 1471 8.394328539 47.81666672 17.3818159 -0.593158827 268.9472307 160.6 1552 10.07314535 46.10189775 18.66593411 1.480356581 272.4990389 151.8 1594 9.29695968 47.95967595 19.90556238 -1.31164302 249.9686622 144.1 1671 9.881275086 46.44495264 19.58349046 0.179059708 263.1853795 134.2 1676 9.63817669 48.50990216 19.24161435 0.034739032 257.1672521 136.4 1701 8.117712567 48.10140968 22.35443692 -6.119011781 263.6665587 129.25 1732 11.40267015 45.97311034 15.80406156 7.001278745 261.6626575 116.05 1761 8.546191632 44.83344166 18.16899887 -1.076615608 273.4181943 115.5 1793 8.7829826 48.26945485 18.90179129 -1.335826087 266.165697 108.9 1822 11.13593437 43.60042111 21.92901873 0.342850016 270.5637638 102.3 1852 9.096373129 44.03223915 21.05731263 -2.864566373 270.0847369 95.15 1881 8.277960511 47.56731086 17.85886694 -1.30294592 269.6263438 88 1911 8.819671143 45.32116776 16.78680134 0.852540949 273.6271334 81.4 1941 7.941370869 45.12812789 19.04904199 -3.166300254 285.2451655
