The latter is coincident with the "First Dark Age," the period of the greatest historically recorded drought in tropical Africa. Variable deposition of F- and Na+ during the African Humid Period suggests rapidly fluctuating lake levels between ~11.7 and 4 ka. Over the 20th century, the areal extent of Kilimanjaro's ice fields has decreased ~80%, and if current climatological conditions persist, the remaining ice fields are likely to disappear between 2015 and 2020. #-------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: US National Science Foundation # Grant: ATM-9910172 #-------------------- # Site_Information # Site_Name: Kilimanjaro # Location: Tanzania # Northernmost_Latitude: -3.08 # Southernmost_Latitude: -3.08 # Easternmost_Longitude: 37.35 # Westernmost_Longitude: 37.35 # Elevation_m: 5893 #-------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: KNIF2 36Cl # Earliest_Year: # Most_Recent_Year: # Time_Unit: # Core_Length_m: 50.7 # Parameter_Keywords: radiogenic isotopes # Notes: Data from Fig. 1-supplemental.
