A total of 661 lake/wetland, geomorphic, marine, and speleothem records were identified and then assessed against a set of a priori criteria based on temporal resolution, record length, dating methods, and confidence of the proxy-climate relationship over the Common Era. A high quality subset of 22 records across Australasia met the criteria and they are endorsed for subsequent analyses. New chronologies based on progressive Bayesian techniques were constructed for the high quality records to ensure a consistent approach to age modelling and quantification of age uncertainties. Chronological uncertainty was the primary reason why records did not meet the selection criteria. Despite present limitations, existing proxies and reconstruction techniques that successfully capture climate variability in the region show potential to address spatial gaps and expand the range of climate variables covering the last 2000 years from the Australasian region. #--------------------------------------- # Publication # Authors: Tierney, JE; Oppo, DW; Rosenthal, Y; Russell, JM; Linsley, BK # Published_Date_or_Year: 2010 # Published_Title: Coordinated hydrological regimes in the Indo-Pacific region during the past two millennia # Journal_Name: Paleoceanography # Volume: 25 # Edition: # Issue: # Pages: PA1102 # Report Number: # DOI: 10.1029/2009pa001871 # Online_Resource: # Full_Citation: Tierney, J. Paleoceanography, 25. # Abstract: Instrumental data suggest that major shifts in tropical Pacific atmospheric dynamics and hydrology have occurred within the past century, potentially in response to anthropogenic warming. To better understand these trends, we use the hydrogen isotopic ratios of terrestrial higher plant leaf waxes ( delta D(wax)) in marine sediments from southwest Sulawesi, Indonesia, to compile a detailed reconstruction of central Indo-Pacific Warm Pool (IPWP) hydrologic variability spanning most of the last two millennia. Our paleodata are highly correlated with a monsoon reconstruction from Southeast Asia, indicating that intervals of strong East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) activity are associated with a weaker Indonesian monsoon (IM). Furthermore, the centennial-scale oscillations in our data follow known changes in Northern Hemisphere climate ( e. g., the Little Ice Age and Medieval Warm Period) implying a dynamic link between Northern Hemisphere temperatures and IPWP hydrology. The inverse relationship between the EASM and IM suggests that migrations of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and associated changes in monsoon strength caused synoptic hydrologic shifts in the IPWP throughout most of the past two millennia. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: # Grant: #--------------------------------------- # Site Information # Site_Name: West Sulawesi Margin # Location: # Country: # Northernmost_Latitude: 3.883333 # Southernmost_Latitude: 3.883333 # Easternmost_Longitude: 119.45 # Westernmost_Longitude: 119.45 # Elevation: -459 #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: BJ8-03-31MCA # First_Year: 238.5 # Last_Year: -36.6 # Time_Unit: cal yr BP # Core_Length: 50.5 # Notes: #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: # # Core MC31A Core34GGC # Lab ID OS-45713 OS-58731 OS-52863 OS-52741 OS-52742 OS-52743 OS-52733 OS-45717 # Dated material mixed planktonic foraminifera mixed planktonic foraminifera mixed planktonic foraminifera mixed planktonic foraminifera mixed planktonic foraminifera mixed planktonic foraminifera mixed planktonic foraminifera mixed planktonic foraminifera # depth_bot (mm) 10 270 500 95 1045 2005 3045 3810 # depth_top (mm) 0 260 490 85 1035 1995 3035 3800 # age (bp) # age14C (bp) Modern 620 675 780 1320 1900 2270 2750 # age_error (years) 30 45 55 40 45 45 30 # calibrated age (cal BP) NA 138 232 358 748 1320 1719 2308 # 2-sigma error of cal age (years) 94 95 79 43 30 59 43 # cal_age_range_old (bp) # cal_age_range_young (2_s) # depth (mm) # thickness (mm) # notes Rejected from published age model # # 210Pb and 214Pb measurements for MC31. # # Depth, cm 210Pb, Bq/g 214Pb, Bq/g # 0-1 1.5745 0.0395 # 1-2 1.4219 0.0416 # 2-3 1.2811 0.038 # 3-4 1.2833 0.0407 # 4-5 1.1375 0.0404 # 5-6 0.8126 0.0387 # 6-7 0.6544 0.0395 # 7-8 0.6455 0.0394 # 11-12 0.3838 0.0325 # 14-15 0.2887 0.0317 # 17-18 0.1823 0.0325 # 20-21 0.1177 0.0318 # 23-24 0.1065 0.0331 # # #--------------------------------------- # Variables # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-longname components (9 components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, archive, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) ## Depth_cm ,Depth,NA,,cm,,NA,,NA,N ## PublishedAge_YBP ,Ages from original record publication,NA,,years before present (present=1950CE),,NA,,NA,N ## BACON0.05CI ,5% confidence interval age as calculated in BACON age modelling software,NA,,years before present (present=1950CE),,NA,,NA,N ## BACON0.95CI ,95% confidence interval age as calculated in BACON age modelling software,NA,,years before present (present=1950CE),,NA,,NA,N ## BACONmedian ,median sample age as calculated in BACON age modelling software,NA,,years before present (present=1950CE),,NA,,NA,N ## BACONwmean ,weighted mean age as calculated in BACON age modelling software,NA,,years before present (present=1950CE),,NA,,NA,N ## dD-C30 ,hydrogen isotopes of plant waxes,C30 n-acids,,per mil vs. VSMOW,,Plant wax,,gas chromatography–isotope ratio monitoring–mass spectrometry ,N #------------------------ # Data # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format -
