Here, we present PhanSST, a database containing nearly 150,000 data points from five proxy systems that can be used to estimate past sea surface temperature. The geochemical data have a near-global spatial distribution and temporally span most of the Phanerozoic. Each proxy value is associated with consistent and queryable metadata fields, including information about the location, age, and taxonomy of the organism from which the data derive. To promote transparency and reproducibility, we include all available published data, regardless of interpreted preservation state or vital effects. However, we also provide expert-assigned diagenetic assessments, ecological and environmental flags, and other proxy-specific fields, which facilitate informed and responsible reuse of the database. The data are quality control checked and the foraminiferal taxonomy has been updated. PhanSST will serve as a valuable resource to the paleoclimate community and has myriad applications, including evolutionary, geochemical, diagenetic, and proxy calibration studies. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Roland and Debra Sauermann # Grant: #--------------------------------------- # Site_Information # Site_Name: Global Ocean # Location: Global Ocean # Northernmost_Latitude: 90 # Southernmost_Latitude: -90 # Easternmost_Longitude: 180 # Westernmost_Longitude: -180 # Elevation_m: #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: PhanSST Ref List Judd2022 # First_Year: # Last_Year: # Time_Unit: # Core_Length_m: # Parameter_Keywords: oxygen isotopes, geochemistry, biomarkers # Notes: References for all samples in PhanSST database. #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: #--------------------------------------- # Variables # PaST_Thesaurus_Download_Resource: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/paleo-search/skos/past-thesaurus.rdf # PaST_Thesaurus_Download_Description: Paleoenvironmental Standard Terms (PaST) Thesaurus terms, definitions, and relationships in SKOS format. # # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-var components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, data type, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) # ## Title notes,,,,,paleoceanography,,,C,Publication title ## Author notes,,,,,paleoceanography,,,C,Lead author of publication ## Year notes,,,,,paleoceanography,,,N,Year of publication ## Journal notes,,,,,paleoceanography,,,C,Journal name ## PublicationDOI notes,,,,,paleoceanography,,,C, The DOI or other identifying hyperlink of the original publication ## DataDOI notes,,,,,paleoceanography,,,C, The DOI or other identifying hyperlink to the online repository hosting the data ## d18Ocarb notes,,,,,paleoceanography,,,N,Flag of 1 (Yes) or 0 (No) indicating if publication has d18Ocarb data ## d18Ophos notes,,,,,paleoceanography,,,N,Flag of 1 (Yes) or 0 (No) indicating if publication has d18Ophos data ## Mg/Ca notes,,,,,paleoceanography,,,N,Flag of 1 (Yes) or 0 (No) indicating if publication has Mg/Ca data ## TEX86 notes,,,,,paleoceanography,,,N,Flag of 1 (Yes) or 0 (No) indicating if publication has TEX86 data ## UK'37 notes,,,,,paleoceanography,,,N,Flag of 1 (Yes) or 0 (No) indicating if publication has Uk'37 data #------------------------ # Data: # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format -
