Here, we estimate how long a water mass has remained isolated from the atmosphere and utilize 14C/12C ratios (Δ14C) to trace the pathway and escape route of carbon sequestered in the deep ocean through the mixed layer to the atmosphere. The position of our core at the northern margin of the Southern Indian Ocean, tracks latitudinal shifts of the Southern Ocean frontal zones across the deglaciation. Our results suggest an expanded glacial Antarctic region trapped CO2, whereas deglacial expansion of the subantarctic permitted ventilation of the trapped CO2, contributing to a rapid atmospheric CO2 rise. We identify frontal positions as a key factor balancing CO2 outgassing versus sequestration in a region currently responsible for nearly half of global ocean CO2 uptake. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: US National Science Foundation # Grant: 2002630 #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: US National Science Foundation # Grant: 1559080 #--------------------------------------- # Site_Information # Site_Name: TT1811-50GGC # Location: Indian Ocean # Northernmost_Latitude: -38.344 # Southernmost_Latitude: -38.344 # Easternmost_Longitude: 77.715 # Westernmost_Longitude: 77.715 # Elevation_m: -1116 #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: TT1811-50GGC_truncatulanoides_isotopes # First_Year: 42322 # Last_Year: 436 # Time_Unit: cal yr BP # Core_Length_m: # Parameter_Keywords: oxygen isotopes # Notes: #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: Radiocarbon # Chronology_Download_Resource: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/templates/noaa-wds-paleo-14c-terms.csv # Chronology_Download_Description: Radiocarbon terms and definitions. # Chronology_Notes: # Rejection_Rationale: # Reservoir_Method: # Calibration_Method: # Age_Model_Method: Bacon version 2.5.7 (Blaauw & Christen, 2011) # Missing_Values: # Chronology_Table: # lab_code depth_end_cm depth_start_cm date_type material_dated age_calib_BP1950 age_calib_uncert_yr age_14C_BP1950 age_14C_1s_yr delta_R_yr delta_R_uncert_yr calib_curve # UCIAMS_250775 3 4 14C AMS G. inflata NA NA 2930 20 442 101 Marine20 # UCIAMS_250776 5 6 14C AMS G. inflata NA NA 2010 15 442 101 Marine20 # UCIAMS_250777 6 7 14C AMS G. inflata NA NA 2285 15 442 101 Marine20 # UCIAMS_250778 7 8 14C AMS G. inflata NA NA 2255 15 442 101 Marine20 # UCIAMS_250779 8 9 14C AMS G. inflata NA NA 4415 15 442 101 Marine20 # UCIAMS_250780 10 11 14C AMS G. inflata NA NA 4070 20 442 101 Marine20 # UCIAMS_240943 12 13 14C AMS G. inflata NA NA 5465 15 442 101 Marine20 # UCIAMS_250781 14 15 14C AMS G. inflata NA NA 4895 20 442 101 Marine20 # UCIAMS_250782 16 17 14C AMS G. inflata NA NA 6700 15 442 101 Marine20 # UCIAMS_250783 18 19 14C AMS G. inflata NA NA 6020 15 442 101 Marine20 # EDC_tie_1 24 25 tie point G. bulloides 18O tied to ice core 18O 9800 110 NA NA NA NA None # EDC_tie_2 26 27 tie point G. bulloides 18O tied to ice core 18O 11850 95 NA NA NA NA None # EDC_tie_3 32 33 tie point G. bulloides 18O tied to ice core 18O 12650 110 NA NA NA NA None # EDC_tie_4 34 35 tie point G. bulloides 18O tied to ice core 18O 14390 151 NA NA NA NA None # EDC_tie_5 46 47 tie point G. bulloides 18O tied to ice core 18O 17940 189 NA NA NA NA None # EDC_tie_6 62 63 tie point G. bulloides 18O tied to ice core 18O 26350 269 NA NA NA NA None # Fuji_tie_1 72 73 tie point G. bulloides 18O tied to ice core 18O 31000 315 NA NA NA NA None # EDC_tie_7 132 133 tie point G. bulloides 18O tied to ice core 18O 40800 350 NA NA NA NA None #--------------------------------------- # Variables # PaST_Thesaurus_Download_Resource: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/paleo-search/skos/past-thesaurus.rdf # PaST_Thesaurus_Download_Description: Paleoenvironmental Standard Terms (PaST) Thesaurus terms, definitions, and relationships in SKOS format. # # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-var components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, data type, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) # ## Cruise sample identification,,,,,paleoceanography,,,C,sampling cruise identifier ## core sample identification,,,,,paleoceanography,,,C,site name ## top_depth depth at sample end,,,centimeter,,paleoceanography,,,N,Depth top of sample interval (cm) ## bottom_depth depth at sample start,,,centimeter,,paleoceanography,,,N,Depth bottom of sample interval (cm) ## Mean_age age,,,calendar year before present,,paleoceanography,,,N,Mean calendar age ## d18O delta 18O,Globorotalia truncatulanoides,,per mil PDB,,paleoceanography,,isotope ratio mass spectrometry,N, ## lab notes,,,,,paleoceanography,,,C,analyzing lab;
