Here we present leaf wax hydrogen isotope records of rainfall from paleolake sediment cores from key time windows that resolve long-term trends, variations, and high-latitude effects on tropical African precipitation. Eastern African rainfall was dominantly controlled by variations in low-latitude summer insolation during most of the early and middle Pleistocene, with little evidence that glacial–interglacial cycles impacted rainfall until the late Pleistocene. We observe the influence of high-latitude-driven climate processes emerging from the last interglacial (Marine Isotope Stage 5) to the present, an interval when glacial–interglacial cycles were strong and insolation forcing was weak. Our results demonstrate a variable response of eastern African rainfall to low-latitude insolation forcing and high-latitude-driven climate change, likely related to the relative strengths of these forcings through time and a threshold in monsoon sensitivity. We observe little difference in mean rainfall between the early, middle, and late Pleistocene, which suggests that orbitally-driven climate variations likely played a more significant role than gradual change in the relationship between early humans and their environment. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: National Science Foundation # Grant: EAR 1826938, EAR 1123942, BCS 1241859 #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: International Continental Scientific Drilling Program # Grant: #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) # Grant: Priority Program SPP 1006,ICSP SCHA 472/13 and /18, TR 419/8 and /10 #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Collaborative Research Centre 806 (CRC 806) # Grant: 57444011 #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: United Kingdom Natural Environment Research Council (UK NERC) # Grant: NE/K014560/1 #--------------------------------------- # Site_Information # Site_Name: HSPDP-CHB14-2A and HSPDP-CHB14-2B # Location: Ethiopia # Northernmost_Latitude: 4.7612 # Southernmost_Latitude: 4.7612 # Easternmost_Longitude: 36.7667 # Westernmost_Longitude: 36.7667 # Elevation_m: 570 #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: HSPDP cores_chewbahir2022_dD # First_Year: 587970 # Last_Year: 1210 # Time_Unit: calendar year before present # Core_Length_m: 283.5 # Parameter_Keywords: # Notes: #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: #--------------------------------------- # Variables # PaST_Thesaurus_Download_Resource: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/paleo-search/skos/past-thesaurus.rdf # PaST_Thesaurus_Download_Description: Paleoenvironmental Standard Terms (PaST) Thesaurus terms, definitions, and relationships in SKOS format. # # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-var components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, data type, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) # ## depth_dD depth,,,meter,,paleolimnology;
