Previous studies have suggested that alpine lakes in N Sweden may be highly sensitive to variations in catchment erosion and precipitation, and that this sensitivity may influence ecologically-based reconstructions of past temperature changes. Here, we have analysed lake sediments covering the last 5100 years from the alpine Lake Vuoksjávrátje in NW Sweden in order to identify different erosional regimes in the lake catchment, sediment sources and lake sedimentary processes, which ultimately affect the palaeoecological record. The measured proxies include elemental geochemistry from XRF core scanning, grain size, sediment accumulation rates, fraction of terrestrial organic carbon and geomorphological mapping, supported by previously published chironomid and total organic carbon data. From the integrated results we identify time intervals when increased intensity of precipitation altered sedimentation and lake catchment erosional processes. The most prominent event occurred c. 2900 cal. a BP and is interpreted to be the result of excessive precipitation, possibly related to the climatic shift towards cooler and wetter conditions referred to as the 2.8 ka event. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Andreefonden (Svenska Sällskapet för Antropologi och Geografi) # Grant: #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Göran Gustafssons stiftelse för forskning i Lappland # Grant: #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Mannerfeldts Fond för geografisk forskning # Grant: #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: De Geers Stiftelse för kvartärgeologisk forskning # Grant: #--------------------------------------- # Site Information # Site_Name: Vuoksjávrátje # Location: Europe>Northern Europe>Scandanavia>Sweden # Country: Sweden # Northernmost_Latitude: 66.25 # Southernmost_Latitude: 66.248 # Easternmost_Longitude: 15.721 # Westernmost_Longitude: 15.715 # Elevation: 850 #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: Vuoksjavratje2015Chiron # First_Year: 5035 # Last_Year: -57 # Time_Unit: cal. yr BP # Core_Length: # Notes: Vuok A surface core and Vuok C long core combined based on TOC curves #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: # AMS radiocarbon dates obtained on terrestrial macrofossils from Lake Vuoksjávrátje core Vuok C. # Radiocarbon calibrations were done in CLAM 2.2 (Blaauw 2010) # based on the IntCal13 atmospheric radiocarbon calibration curve (Reimer et al. 2013). # Note that sediments between 185 and 207 were instantaneously deposited as the result of a flood event. # # Labcode Sample identification used by 14C laboratory References: # Depth_top Depth top of sample interval (cm) Blaauw, M. 2010: Methods and code for 'classical' age-modelling of radiocarbon sequences.
