The age model was developed by aligning the independently radiocarbon dated UK37 records from Braya Sø and Lake E within the 2 sigma error of their respective chronological uncertainties prior to 20-yr resampling utilized in the Kanger Stack. However, the explanations for these large-scale human migrations are varied, including climatic factors, resistance to adaptation, economic marginalization, mercantile exploration, and hostile neighborhood interactions. Evaluating the potential role of climate change is complicated by the lack of quantitative paleoclimate reconstructions near settlement areas and by the relative stability of Holocene temperature derived from ice cores atop the Greenland ice sheet. Here we present high-resolution records of temperature over the past 5,600 y based on alkenone unsaturation in sediments of two lakes in West Greenland. We find that major temperature changes in the past 4,500 y occurred abruptly (within decades), and were coeval in timing with the archaeological records of settlement and abandonment of the Saqqaq, Dorset, and Norse cultures, which suggests that abrupt temperature changes profoundly impacted human civilization in the region. Temperature variations in West Greenland display an antiphased relationship to temperature changes in Ireland over centennial to millennial timescales, resembling the interannual to multidecadal temperature seesaw associated with the North Atlantic Oscillation. #-------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: US National Science Foundation # Grant: ARC-0402383, AGS-0081226 #-------------------- # Site_Information # Site_Name: Braya Sø # Location: Greenland # Northernmost_Latitude: 66.987 # Southernmost_Latitude: 66.987 # Easternmost_Longitude: -51.039 # Westernmost_Longitude: -51.039 # Elevation_m: 170 #-------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: D'Andrea2011 Braya Sø # First_Year: 6119 # Last_Year: -55 # Time_Unit: cal yr BP # Core_Length_m: # Parameter_Keywords: geochemistry # Notes: #-------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: #-------------------- # Variables # PaST_Thesaurus_Download_Resource: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/paleo-search/skos/past-thesaurus.rdf # PaST_Thesaurus_Download_Description: Paleoenvironmental Standard Terms (PaST) Thesaurus terms, definitions, and relationships in SKOS format. # # Data variables follow that are preceded by '##' in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-var components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, data type, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) # ## age_calBP age,,,calendar year before present,,paleolimnology,,,N, ## Uk'37 alkenone unsaturation index Uk37 prime,,,dimensionless,,paleolimnology,,,N, #-------------------- # Data: # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing_Values: age_calBP Uk'37 -55 -0.640 -53 -0.637 -50 -0.614 -45 -0.627 -40 -0.633 -33 -0.616 -25 -0.617 -16 -0.585 -6 -0.620 16 -0.651 29 -0.644 43 -0.637 58 -0.634 74 -0.637 85 -0.673 103 -0.648 122 -0.629 143 -0.600 164 -0.634 186 -0.597 208 -0.645 220 -0.661 233 -0.644 257 -0.646 282 -0.642 295 -0.640 309 -0.615 335 -0.628 362 -0.630 390 -0.637 419 -0.599 448 -0.624 478 -0.581 509 -0.625 540 -0.637 572 -0.633 604 -0.618 637 -0.628 670 -0.632 704 -0.645 739 -0.683 774 -0.680 792 -0.694 810 -0.622 846 -0.591 885 -0.618 924 -0.629 964 -0.653 1004 -0.651 1044 -0.666 1085 -0.674 1126 -0.648 1168 -0.659 1210 -0.650 1252 -0.646 1295 -0.635 1338 -0.668 1381 -0.679 1413 -0.669 1445 -0.671 1478 -0.657 1511 -0.641 1544 -0.601 1577 -0.658 1653 -0.658 1686 -0.623 1721 -0.600 1755 -0.557 1789 -0.566 1851 -0.637 1913 -0.667 1975 -0.689 2046 -0.656 2073 -0.657 2100 -0.640 2171 -0.605 2219 -0.622 2267 -0.639 2315 -0.584 2364 -0.580 2417 -0.628 2515 -0.659 2613 -0.594 2690 -0.629 2767 -0.632 2843 -0.627 2920 -0.607 2953 -0.634 2987 -0.591 3021 -0.570 3074 -0.572 3127 -0.559 3181 -0.542 3234 -0.532 3283 -0.560 3332 -0.563 3381 -0.529 3429 -0.594 3471 -0.578 3512 -0.564 3554 -0.558 3595 -0.615 3636 -0.598 3676 -0.619 3758 -0.626 3839 -0.590 3920 -0.595 3999 -0.600 4118 -0.565 4153 -0.647 4303 -0.656 4375 -0.646 4445 -0.682 4515 -0.673 4655 -0.699 4722 -0.685 4787 -0.680 4852 -0.676 4915 -0.675 4977 -0.662 5039 -0.698 5103 -0.678 5167 -0.650 5229 -0.620 5290 -0.646 5350 -0.612 5410 -0.626 5468 -0.618 5525 -0.636 5581 -0.638 5637 -0.650 5691 -0.590 5744 -0.571 5797 -0.541 5848 -0.509 5899 -0.529 5949 -0.486 5999 -0.520 6071 -0.490 6095 -0.545 6119 -0.478
