However, the explanations for these large-scale human migrations are varied, including climatic factors, resistance to adaptation, economic marginalization, mercantile exploration, and hostile neighborhood interactions. Evaluating the potential role of climate change is complicated by the lack of quantitative paleoclimate reconstructions near settlement areas and by the relative stability of Holocene temperature derived from ice cores atop the Greenland ice sheet. Here we present high-resolution records of temperature over the past 5,600 y based on alkenone unsaturation in sediments of two lakes in West Greenland. We find that major temperature changes in the past 4,500 y occurred abruptly (within decades), and were coeval in timing with the archaeological records of settlement and abandonment of the Saqqaq, Dorset, and Norse cultures, which suggests that abrupt temperature changes profoundly impacted human civilization in the region. Temperature variations in West Greenland display an antiphased relationship to temperature changes in Ireland over centennial to millennial timescales, resembling the interannual to multidecadal temperature seesaw associated with the North Atlantic Oscillation. #-------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: US National Science Foundation # Grant: ARC-0402383, AGS-0081226 #-------------------- # Site_Information # Site_Name: Lake E # Location: Greenland # Northernmost_Latitude: 67.062 # Southernmost_Latitude: 67.062 # Easternmost_Longitude: -51.127 # Westernmost_Longitude: -51.127 # Elevation_m: 170 #-------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: D'Andrea2011 LakeE # First_Year: 5592 # Last_Year: 74 # Time_Unit: cal yr BP # Core_Length_m: # Parameter_Keywords: geochemistry # Notes: #-------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: #-------------------- # Variables # PaST_Thesaurus_Download_Resource: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/paleo-search/skos/past-thesaurus.rdf # PaST_Thesaurus_Download_Description: Paleoenvironmental Standard Terms (PaST) Thesaurus terms, definitions, and relationships in SKOS format. # # Data variables follow that are preceded by '##' in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-var components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, data type, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) # ## age_calBP age,,,calendar year before present,,paleolimnology,,,N, ## Uk'37 alkenone unsaturation index Uk37 prime,,,dimensionless,,paleolimnology,,,N, #-------------------- # Data: # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing_Values: age_calBP Uk'37 74 -0.624 85 -0.644 95 -0.625 106 -0.625 142 -0.581 154 -0.584 167 -0.564 179 -0.586 193 -0.660 206 -0.673 220 -0.691 234 -0.698 248 -0.681 263 -0.664 278 -0.666 293 -0.660 308 -0.619 324 -0.578 340 -0.562 356 -0.578 373 -0.597 389 -0.635 406 -0.624 423 -0.633 441 -0.633 458 -0.622 476 -0.639 494 -0.656 512 -0.653 530 -0.649 568 -0.642 607 -0.663 626 -0.648 645 -0.661 664 -0.668 684 -0.667 704 -0.684 724 -0.691 765 -0.702 785 -0.679 805 -0.672 826 -0.607 846 -0.567 908 -0.608 949 -0.615 968 -0.621 987 -0.613 1007 -0.620 1026 -0.607 1090 -0.622 1132 -0.611 1174 -0.594 1216 -0.613 1236 -0.612 1256 -0.581 1299 -0.612 1341 -0.636 1361 -0.642 1381 -0.654 1438 -0.635 1495 -0.646 1552 -0.621 1586 -0.655 1620 -0.651 1654 -0.634 1688 -0.537 1789 -0.542 1824 -0.588 1859 -0.604 1894 -0.641 1929 -0.637 1941 -0.682 1975 -0.667 2008 -0.673 2041 -0.682 2073 -0.651 2106 -0.644 2138 -0.650 2171 -0.609 2190 -0.662 2230 -0.632 2249 -0.652 2289 -0.643 2308 -0.613 2327 -0.623 2345 -0.605 2364 -0.600 2381 -0.624 2419 -0.639 2457 -0.638 2494 -0.661 2511 -0.677 2528 -0.672 2544 -0.669 2561 -0.650 2597 -0.666 2613 -0.590 2637 -0.629 2679 -0.645 2702 -0.656 2725 -0.661 2767 -0.673 2789 -0.667 2812 -0.684 2835 -0.691 2857 -0.659 2897 -0.602 2920 -0.590 2947 -0.603 2993 -0.595 3021 -0.549 3035 -0.558 3066 -0.582 3080 -0.590 3094 -0.569 3107 -0.583 3121 -0.543 3135 -0.585 3148 -0.560 3178 -0.605 3191 -0.603 3204 -0.589 3234 -0.558 3248 -0.583 3262 -0.588 3277 -0.603 3291 -0.593 3305 -0.626 3319 -0.631 3333 -0.604 3347 -0.621 3361 -0.606 3375 -0.599 3389 -0.599 3402 -0.640 3416 -0.626 3430 -0.655 3445 -0.633 3461 -0.637 3476 -0.607 3491 -0.582 3507 -0.546 3522 -0.572 3537 -0.501 3553 -0.593 3568 -0.537 3583 -0.626 3598 -0.599 3613 -0.626 3628 -0.587 3644 -0.632 3659 -0.612 3674 -0.624 3689 -0.606 3704 -0.605 3734 -0.616 3749 -0.645 3764 -0.624 3779 -0.612 3794 -0.618 3809 -0.598 3824 -0.622 3839 -0.587 3854 -0.613 3869 -0.579 3884 -0.638 3900 -0.577 3915 -0.587 3945 -0.618 3976 -0.630 4007 -0.630 4023 -0.634 4038 -0.600 4070 -0.564 4101 -0.574 4118 -0.575 4135 -0.610 4152 -0.611 4170 -0.609 4188 -0.616 4205 -0.610 4240 -0.636 4258 -0.637 4276 -0.620 4295 -0.604 4313 -0.630 4332 -0.646 4351 -0.620 4370 -0.627 4389 -0.626 4427 -0.604 4465 -0.588 4504 -0.625 4544 -0.598 4565 -0.629 4586 -0.612 4608 -0.635 4629 -0.625 4651 -0.625 4673 -0.628 4696 -0.597 4718 -0.617 4741 -0.648 4764 -0.633 4788 -0.647 4811 -0.639 4835 -0.618 4860 -0.659 4884 -0.654 4909 -0.647 4934 -0.601 4960 -0.633 4986 -0.658 5012 -0.665 5039 -0.666 5064 -0.655 5090 -0.650 5116 -0.641 5143 -0.656 5170 -0.637 5197 -0.609 5225 -0.612 5253 -0.625 5282 -0.647 5311 -0.598 5340 -0.627 5370 -0.592 5400 -0.597 5431 -0.612 5462 -0.637 5494 -0.653 5526 -0.627 5559 -0.607 5592 -0.532
