Holocene hydroclimate variations cannot be interpreted from the shoreline record, but instead can be investigated by proxies archived in the sediments. GLAD1-GSL00-1B was cored in 2000 and recently dated by radiocarbon for the Holocene section with the top 11 m representing ~7 ka to present. Sediment samples every 30 cm (~220 years) were studied for the full suite of microbial membrane lipids, including those responsive to temperature and salinity. The Archaeol and Caldarchaeol Ecometric (ACE) index detects the increase in lipids of halophilic archaea, relative to generalists, as salinity increases. We find Holocene ACE values ranged from 81-98, which suggests persistent hypersalinity with <50 g/L variability across 7.2 ka. The temperature proxy, MBTʹ5Me, yields values similar to modern mean annual air temperature for months above freezing (MAF = 15.7°C) over the last 5.5 ka. Several GDGT metrics show a step shift in microbial communities and limnology at 5.5 ka. Extended archaeol detects elevated salinity during the regional mid-Holocene drought, not readily detected in the Holocene ACE record that is often near the upper limit of the salinity proxy. We infer that the mid-Holocene GSL was shallower and saltier than the late Holocene. The current drying may be returning the lake to conditions not seen since the mid-Holocene. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: National Science Foundation # Grant: 1903665 #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: David and Lucile Packard Foundation # Grant: #--------------------------------------- # Site_Information # Site_Name: GLAD1-GSL00-1B (Great Salt Lake) # Location: Utah # Northernmost_Latitude: 41.094034 # Southernmost_Latitude: 41.094034 # Easternmost_Longitude: -112.364796 # Westernmost_Longitude: -112.364796 # Elevation_m: 1270 #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: GLAD1-GSL00-1B_Biomarker # First_Year: 7206 # Last_Year: 291 # Time_Unit: calendar year before present # Core_Length_m: 33.13 # Parameter_Keywords: geochemistry, age control, lake level, physical properties # Notes: We report data for the middle to late Holocene section (upper 10.66 m) #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: #--------------------------------------- # Variables # PaST_Thesaurus_Download_Resource: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/paleo-search/skos/past-thesaurus.rdf # PaST_Thesaurus_Download_Description: Paleoenvironmental Standard Terms (PaST) Thesaurus terms, definitions, and relationships in SKOS format. # # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-var components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, data type, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) # ## depth_m depth,,,meter,,Paleolimnology; Climate Reconstructions,,,N,spliced depth ## age_calyrsBP age,,,calendar year before present,,Paleolimnology; Climate Reconstructions,,,N,Mean; central estimate of the age model.
