However, because moraine chronologies are characteristically discontinuous, Holocene glacier fluctuations and their climatic drivers remain ambiguous, and future glacier changes are uncertain. Here, we construct a continuous 10-thousand-year (ka) record of glacier activity in the Teton Range, Wyoming, using glacial and environmental indicators in alpine lake sediments. We show that Teton glaciers persisted in some form through early Holocene warmth, likely as small debris-covered glaciers or rock glaciers. Subsequent Neoglacial ice expansion began ~6.3 ka, with two prominent glacier maxima at ~2.8 and 0.1 ka that were separated by a multicentennial phase of ice retreat. Comparison with regional paleoclimate records suggests that glacier activity was dominantly controlled by winter precipitation variability superposed on long- term Holocene temperature trends, offering key insights into western U.S. glacier resilience and vulnerability to future warming. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: US National Science Foundation # Grant: 1755067 #--------------------------------------- # Site_Information # Site_Name: Delta Lake, Grand Teton National Park # Location: Wyoming # Northernmost_Latitude: 43.7319 # Southernmost_Latitude: 43.7319 # Easternmost_Longitude: -110.7720 # Westernmost_Longitude: -110.7720 # Elevation_m: 2755 #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: DEL17 silt-clay flux Larsen2020 # First_Year: 10032 # Last_Year: 62 # Time_Unit: calendar year before present # Core_Length_m: 10.6 # Parameter_Keywords: physical properties # Notes: #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: Radiocarbon # Chronology_Download_Resource: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/templates/noaa-wds-paleo-14c-terms.csv # Chronology_Download_Description: Radiocarbon terms and definitions. # Chronology_Notes: See Supplemental Material published with manuscript for all chronological information # Rejection_Rationale: # Reservoir_Method: # Calibration_Method: # Age_Model_Method: # Missing_Values: # Chronology_Table: # lab_code date_type core_id depth_cm material_dated age_14C_BP1950 age_14C_1s_yr age_calib_BP1950 age_calib_neg2s_BP1950 age_calib_pos2s_BP1950 calib_curve # UCIAMS172640 14C AMS DEL15 170.0 wood fragments 875 15 773 734 892 IntCal20 # UCIAMS164821 14C AMS DEL15 353.0 needle 2095 20 2067 2000 2124 IntCal20 # CURL25189 14C AMS DEL17 566.0 wood fragments 3185 25 3410 3367 3450 IntCal20 # UCIAMS164822 14C AMS DEL15 732.0 wood twig 4305 20 4857 4836 4948 IntCal20 # CURL25186 14C AMS DEL17 861.5 wood twig 5635 20 6420 6323 6477 IntCal20 # NA tephra DEL17 915.0 Mazama 6730 40 7597 7514 7666 IntCal20 # CURL25185 14C AMS DEL17 995.0 wood fragments 7840 25 8614 8553 8696 IntCal20 # CURL22840 14C AMS DEL17 1069.5 wood fragment 9355 35 10575 10444 10684 IntCal20 # CURL22825 14C AMS DEL17 1140.0 wood fragment 9500 35 10764 10608 11069 IntCal20 # CURL22809 14C AMS DEL17 1176.5 wood fragment 9855 35 11248 11205 11316 IntCal20 #--------------------------------------- # Variables # PaST_Thesaurus_Download_Resource: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/paleo-search/skos/past-thesaurus.rdf # PaST_Thesaurus_Download_Description: Paleoenvironmental Standard Terms (PaST) Thesaurus terms, definitions, and relationships in SKOS format. # # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-var components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, data type, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) # ## DEL17_Age_yrBP age,,,calendar year before present,,Paleolimnology,,,N, ## silt.clay_FLUX grain size class,sediment,,gram per square centimeter per year,,Paleolimnology,,diffraction and scattering method,N,silt and clay flux;
