Here we present a multi-proxy reconstruction from a lacustrine sediment record on Kiritimati Atoll that spans the last millennium. A lake salinity reconstruction from the δ2H values of total lipid extracts, combined with changes in sediment mineralogy and the stable isotopic composition of inorganic carbonates, indicate the presence of several distinct hydrologic regimes on Kiritimati, including a period of persistent aridity from 960–1030 CE, shorter episodes of aridity from 1030–1370 CE, and extreme aridity throughout the latter half of the last millennium, from 1370–1970 CE, that drove complete evaporation of the lake. A period of wetter, variable conditions defines recent decades. Compound-specific lipid biomarker δ2H values indicate that shifts in microbial community structure occurred in the past, from a community dominated by photoautotrophic and chemoautotrophic organisms in more arid periods to a more metabolically diverse community in the recent period. Comparison of this record with nearby sediment records from Washington Island reveals a similar pattern of aridity through the last millennium, followed by wetter conditions in the modern period. These coherent changes in hydroclimate in the central Pacific are inconsistent with a migration of the Pacific Intertropical Convergence Zone within these latitudes. Rather, past aridity was caused by reduced El Niño-Southern Oscillation variability, observed through the low-pass filter of lacustrine records, or by multidecadal to multi-century strengthening of the Pacific Walker Circulation. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: US National Science Foundation # Grant: EAR 1602590 #--------------------------------------- # Site_Information # Site_Name: Lake 30, Kiritimati # Location: Kiribati # Northernmost_Latitude: 1.9 # Southernmost_Latitude: 1.9 # Easternmost_Longitude: -157.4 # Westernmost_Longitude: -157.4 # Elevation_m: #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: K17-30A TLE Wyman2021 # First_Year: 725 # Last_Year: 2011 # Time_Unit: year Common Era # Core_Length_m: 0.91 # Parameter_Keywords: hydrogen isotopes # Notes: #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: Radiocarbon # Chronology_Download_Resource: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/templates/noaa-wds-paleo-14c-terms.csv # Chronology_Download_Description: Radiocarbon terms and definitions. # Chronology_Notes: # Rejection_Rationale: # Reservoir_Method: A reservoir effect of 58 (±50) years was determined from the core top sample and applied to all measurements # Calibration_Method: Modern dates were calibrated using CALIBomb with the IntCal13 pre-bomb calibration curve (Reimer et al., 2013) and the NHZ3 calibration data set (Hua et al., 2013). # Age_Model_Method: Bacon 2.3.7 (Blaauw & Christen, 2011) # Missing_Values: # Chronology_Table: # lab_name lab_code core_id material_dated age_14C_BP1950 age_14C_1s_yr age_calib_BP1950 age_calib_1s_yr depth_raw_cm depth_cm calib_curve res_age_yr res_age_uncert_yr # Illinois Geological Survey/University of California-Irvine ISGSA3470 K614-1A-1P Organics (Core Top) NA NA -64 1 0 1 none 0 0 # Illinois Geological Survey/University of California-Irvine ISGSA4702 K614-1B-1P Organics NA NA -56 5 6 16.9398686503301 none 0 0 # Direct AMS D-AMS 030330 K17-30A Organics NA NA -55 5 15 15 none 0 0 # Illinois Geological Survey/University of California-Irvine ISGSA3591 K614-1B-1P Microbial Mat 660 15 NA NA 27.5 29.8127593305307 IntCal13 58 50 # Illinois Geological Survey/University of California-Irvine ISGSA4703 K614-2C-1L Microbial Mat 665 20 NA NA 5.4 30.7 IntCal13 58 50 # Illinois Geological Survey/University of California-Irvine ISGSA4704 K17-30A Microbial Mat 675 20 NA NA 26 26.1 IntCal13 58 50 # Illinois Geological Survey/University of California-Irvine ISGSA3432 K614-1A-1P Seed 835 15 NA NA 45.5 41.5502907868651 IntCal13 0 0 # Illinois Geological Survey/University of California-Irvine ISGSA4705 K17-30A Microbial Mat 845 20 NA NA 44 43.6 IntCal13 58 50 # Illinois Geological Survey/University of California-Irvine ISGSA3590 K614-2C-1L Microbial Mat 850 15 NA NA 16 43.4375 IntCal13 58 50 # Illinois Geological Survey/University of California-Irvine ISGSA4394 K17-30A Microbial Mat 980 15 NA NA 57 57 IntCal13 58 50 # Illinois Geological Survey/University of California-Irvine ISGSA3506 K614-2D-1B Microbial Mat 1210 15 NA NA 23 73.794 IntCal13 58 50 # Illinois Geological Survey/University of California-Irvine ISGSA4395 K17-30A Microbial Mat 1305 20 NA NA 85 85 IntCal13 58 50 # Direct AMS D-AMS 030331 K17-30A Microbial Mat 1307 20 NA NA 73 73 IntCal13 58 50 #--------------------------------------- # Variables # PaST_Thesaurus_Download_Resource: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/paleo-search/skos/past-thesaurus.rdf # PaST_Thesaurus_Download_Description: Paleoenvironmental Standard Terms (PaST) Thesaurus terms, definitions, and relationships in SKOS format. # # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-var components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, data type, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) # ## depth_cm depth,,,centimeter,,paleolimnology,,,N, ## age_AD age,,,year Common Era,,paleolimnology,,,N, ## dD_TLE delta 2H,lipid,,per mil VSMOW,,paleolimnology,,isotope ratio mass spectrometry,N,total lipid extracts ## dD_TLE_err delta 2H,lipid,one standard deviation,per mil VSMOW,,paleolimnology,,isotope ratio mass spectrometry,N,total lipid extracts ## salinity salinity,lake water;delta 2H,,parts per thousand,,climate reconstructions;
