Synthesis of two new lacustrine paleoclimate records from the Eastern Colombian Andes with existing circum-Andean records shows that effective moisture anomalies were synchronous and in phase across the tropical Andes during the last millennium. During the MCA, when the ITCZ was shifted northward, topographically controlled responses in the northern Andes to vigorous atmospheric convection resulted in low precipitation and high evaporation, while precipitation was also reduced in the southern tropical Andes. During the LIA, precipitation decreased in the northern Andes as the ITCZ migrated southward but was offset by cooling that lowered evaporation, establishing high effective moisture. In the southern tropical Andes, the southward ITCZ position simultaneously strengthened precipitation, increasing effective moisture. MCA-like responses to continued warming trends could similarly reduce northern Andean precipitation while increasing evaporation, thereby lowering effective moisture and possibly reducing water resource availability. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: US National Science Foundation # Grant: Award 1445649 #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Indiana University # Grant: International Development Fund and Research Support Funds Grant #--------------------------------------- # Site_Information # Site_Name: Lake Tota # Location: Colombia # Northernmost_Latitude: 5.497382 # Southernmost_Latitude: 5.497382 # Easternmost_Longitude: -72.978709 # Westernmost_Longitude: -72.978709 # Elevation_m: 3015 #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: Tota and Siscunsi C/N, Clay Bird2024 # First_Year: 1200 # Last_Year: -50 # Time_Unit: calendar year before present # Core_Length_m: # Parameter_Keywords: geochemistry # Notes: #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: Radiocarbon # Chronology_Download_Resource: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/templates/noaa-wds-paleo-14c-terms.csv # Chronology_Download_Description: Radiocarbon terms and definitions. # Chronology_Notes: Core H13 # Rejection_Rationale: # Reservoir_Method: # Calibration_Method: # Age_Model_Method: # Missing_Values: # Chronology_Table: # lab_code depth_end_cm depth_start_cm material_dated age_14C_BP1950 age_14C_1s_yr weight_mg calib_curve # UCI-148018 19 20 Charcoal 580 50 0.042 IntCal # UCI-148022 37 38 Charcoal 1260 70 0.029 IntCal #------------------ # Chronology_Information # Chronology: 210-Lead # Chronology_Download_Resource: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/templates/noaa-wds-paleo-210pb-terms.csv # Chronology_Download_Description: 210-Lead terms and definitions. # Chronology_Notes: Core H13 # Supported_Pb_Method: # Age_Model_Method: # Missing_Values: NA # Chronology_Table: # depth_end_cm depth_start_cm 210Pb_act_Bq/g 210Pb_act_1s_Bq/g 214Pb_act_Bq/g 214Pb_act_1s_Bq/g 210Pbxs_act_Bq/g 210Pbxs_act_1s_Bq/g age_BP1950 age_1s_yr # 0 1 0.31 0.147 0.0658 0.0416 0.2442 0.1054 -63.0682869229593 3.58102559229055 # 1 2 0.369 0.134 0.0988 0.0308 0.2702 0.1032 -61.0023988255064 3.61337361465135 # 2 3 0.368 0.0946 0.0853 0.0274 0.2827 0.0672 -58.095080363569 3.72505957731767 # 3 4 0.358 0.0904 0.0573 0.0187 0.3007 0.0717 -53.7644492059783 3.87325866850549 # 4 5 0.405 0.0981 0.0765 0.0218 0.3285 0.0763 -48.375923242003 4.07662926135829 # 5 6 0.403 0.0972 0.0657 0.0301 0.3373 0.0671 -41.9525519841891 4.43827814599367 # 6 7 0.383 0.0885 0.0848 0.0208 0.2982 0.0677 -32.8209262085513 4.92128382703849 # 7 8 0.33 0.0825 0.0637 0.0202 0.2663 0.0623 -22.6120866567185 5.67854252162462 # 8 9 0.2 0.0493 0.0478 0.00866 0.1522 0.04064 -8.78224222122276 6.81249465637435 # 8 9 0.214 0.0593 0.0705 0.014 0.1435 0.0453 13.9660521603041 7.91077738376222 # 9 10 0.123 0.0352 0.0522 0.0112 0.0708 0.024 44.5927755490309 9.16047771735662 # 10 11 0.0195 0.00758 0.0131 0.00349 0.0064 0.00409 55.0710574902353 9.62736716795177 # 11 12 0.0219 0.00676 0.0135 0.0034 0.0084 0.00336 77.8371542677453 13.6877346777811 # 12 13 0.0242 0.00787 0.0142 0.00478 0.01 0.00309 NA NA # 13 14 0.0162 0.00599 0.0179 0.00448 -0.0017 0.00151 NA NA #--------------------------------------- # Variables # PaST_Thesaurus_Download_Resource: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/paleo-search/skos/past-thesaurus.rdf # PaST_Thesaurus_Download_Description: Paleoenvironmental Standard Terms (PaST) Thesaurus terms, definitions, and relationships in SKOS format. # # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-var components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, data type, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) # ## Tota_avg_depth depth,,,centimeter,,paleolimnology,,,N,Lake Tota H13 Composite Depth ## Tota_H13_%clay clay,,,percent,,paleolimnology,,,N,Lake Tota Clay ## Tota_H13_cn carbon/nitrogen,,,dimensionless,,paleolimnology,,,N,Lake Tota C/N #------------------------ # Data: # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format -
