Quantitative inferences were performed using midge-based transfer functions for water depth and mean July air temperature. The aim was to identify major trends in Holocene climate development. The results were generally consistent with patterns found in previous investigations from nearby regions and indicated some distinct differences in palaeoclimate between southern and northern Finland. The results indicate that the region was characterised by a very cold Late Pleistocene, cool and moist but drying early Holocene, warm and moist mid Holocene and cool and moist late Holocene. A progressive trend of increasing lake levels from the early Holocene towards the present was evident. The results of this study provide implications for regional differences in effective moisture between southern and northern Finland during the Holocene. We present a global compilation of quality-controlled, published, temperature-sensitive proxy records extending back 12,000 years through the Holocene. Data were compiled from 679 sites where time series cover at least 4000 years, are resolved at sub-millennial scale (median spacing of 400 years or finer) and have at least one age control point every 3000 years, with cut-off values slackened in data-sparse regions. The data derive from lake sediment (51%), marine sediment (31%), peat (11%), glacier ice (3%), and other natural archives. The database contains 1319 records, including 157 from the Southern Hemisphere. The multi-proxy database comprises paleotemperature time series based on ecological assemblages, as well as biophysical and geochemical indicators that reflect mean annual or seasonal temperatures, as encoded in the database. This database can be used to reconstruct the spatiotemporal evolution of Holocene temperature at global to regional scales, and is publicly available in Linked Paleo Data (LiPD) format. #------------------ # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: # Grant: #------------------ # Site_Information # Site_Name: Hirvijaervi # Location: Europe>Northern Europe>Scandinavia>Finland # Country: Finland # Northernmost_Latitude: 60.51 # Southernmost_Latitude: 60.51 # Easternmost_Longitude: 25.23 # Westernmost_Longitude: 25.23 # Elevation: 104 #------------------ # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: Hirvijaervi.Luoto.2010 # Earliest_Year: 11500.0 # Most_Recent_Year: 0.0 # Time_Unit: cal yr BP # Core_Length: # Notes: #------------------ # Species # Species_Name: # Species_Code: # Common_Name: #------------------ # Chronology_Information # Chronology: # depth_top depth_bottom age_type age 1SD mateial # 29.0 30.0 age14C 1465.0 30.0 Bulk # 83.0 84.0 age14C 3240.0 130.0 Conifer seed # 202.0 203.0 age14C 6690.0 40.0 Bulk # 302.0 303.0 age14C 8230.0 50.0 Bulk # 405.0 410.0 Deglaciation 11500.0 nan nan #------------------ # Variables # # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-longname components (9 components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, archive, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) # ## depth depth,,,centimeter,,insect;paleolimnology;climate reconstructions,,,N, ## age age,,,calendar year before present,,insect;paleolimnology;climate reconstructions,,,N, ## temperature surface air temperature,midge assemblage,,degree Celsius,Jul,insect;paleolimnology;climate reconstructions,,,N,82-lake Finnish calibration data set (Luoto 2009); WAPLS ## uncertainty surface air temperature,midge assemblage,unspecified error upper bound,degree Celsius,Jul,insect;paleolimnology;climate reconstructions,,,N, ## uncertainty-1 surface air temperature,midge assemblage,unspecified error lower bound,degree Celsius,Jul,insect;paleolimnology;climate reconstructions,,,N, ## reliable notes,,,,,insect;paleolimnology;climate reconstructions,,,C,Data are reliable (Yes or No) # #------------------ # Data: # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing_Values: nan # depth age temperature uncertainty uncertainty-1 reliable 0.0 0.0 16.816 17.537 16.095 Y 5.0 277.53 14.756 15.477 14.035 Y 10.0 553.41 12.408 13.129 11.687 Y 20.0 827.56 15.184 15.905 14.463 Y 30.0 1370.3 15.766 16.487 15.045 Y 40.0 1904.9 14.471 15.192 13.75 Y 50.0 2169.0 14.033 14.754 13.312 Y 60.0 2430.7 14.63 15.351 13.909 Y 70.0 2947.0 14.699 15.42 13.978 Y 80.0 3201.3 15.7 16.421 14.979 Y 90.0 3452.9 16.067 16.788 15.346 Y 100.0 3947.7 16.355 17.076 15.633 Y 110.0 4190.7 15.273 15.994 14.552 Y 120.0 4667.4 16.252 16.973 15.53 Y 130.0 5357.9 17.187 17.908 16.466 Y 140.0 5581.2 17.177 17.898 16.456 Y 150.0 5800.8 17.079 17.8 16.358 Y 160.0 6016.7 16.988 17.709 16.267 Y 170.0 6641.1 16.894 17.615 16.173 Y 180.0 6841.2 16.848 17.569 16.127 Y 190.0 7037.1 16.725 17.446 16.004 Y 200.0 7416.0 15.562 16.282 14.841 Y 210.0 7598.7 15.664 16.385 14.943 Y 220.0 7794.5 14.508 15.229 13.787 Y 230.0 7967.6 15.327 16.048 14.606 Y 240.0 8135.9 15.156 15.877 14.435 Y 250.0 8315.4 15.078 15.799 14.357 Y 260.0 8473.4 15.137 15.858 14.416 Y 270.0 8680.0 15.092 15.813 14.371 Y 280.0 8888.5 14.952 15.673 14.231 Y 290.0 9026.8 16.244 16.965 15.523 Y 300.0 9159.6 16.468 17.189 15.748 Y 310.0 9408.7 16.284 17.005 15.563 Y 320.0 9635.0 15.632 16.353 14.911 Y 330.0 10016.0 15.321 16.042 14.6 Y 340.0 10169.0 15.749 16.47 15.028 Y 350.0 10261.0 14.65 15.371 13.929 Y 360.0 10500.0 13.288 14.009 12.567 Y 370.0 10790.92 13.611 14.332 12.89 Y 380.0 10851.74 13.118 13.839 12.397 Y 390.0 11000.0 14.567 15.288 13.846 Y 395.0 11150.0 14.887 15.608 14.166 Y 400.0 11300.0 14.695 15.416 13.974 Y 405.0 11500.0 9.511 10.232 8.79 Y
