Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, 8, 5, doi:10.1029/2006GC001514 # Abstract: Sea surface temperature and oxygen isotopic records from two well-dated Indian Ocean cores covering the last deglaciation show the occurrence of two periods of increased salinity along the route of warm surface water transport from the Indian to the Atlantic Ocean, one between 18 and 14.5 ka and the other during the Younger Dryas. Our results imply that during these periods, salt accumulated in the tropical Atlantic, creating favorable conditions for an abrupt resumption of the thermohaline circulation and abrupt northern hemisphere warming. Furthermore, we suggest that the observed pattern of millennial climate variability during the last glacial and deglaciation resulted from the interaction between the relatively slow rhythm of expansion and decay of the northern hemisphere ice sheets, and El Niño–Southern Oscillation variability, through changes in the position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. This interaction generated an oscillator with millennial time response that operated at times of sufficient northern hemisphere ice sheets extent. #------------------ # Publication # Authors: Waelbroeck, C.; Levi, C.; Duplessy, J.C.; Labeyrie, L.; Michel, E.; Cortijo, E.; Bassinot, F.; Guichard, F. # Published_Date_or_Year: 2006 # Published_Title: Distant origin of circulation changes in the Indian Ocean during the last deglaciation # Journal_Name: Earth and Planetary Science Letters # Volume: 243 # Edition: # Issue: # Pages: 244-251 # Report: # DOI: 10.1016/j.epsl.2005.12.031 # Online_Resource: # Full_Citation: # Abstract: #------------------ # Publication # Authors: Kaufman, D., N. We present a global compilation of quality-controlled, published, temperature-sensitive proxy records extending back 12,000 years through the Holocene. Data were compiled from 679 sites where time series cover at least 4000 years, are resolved at sub-millennial scale (median spacing of 400 years or finer) and have at least one age control point every 3000 years, with cut-off values slackened in data-sparse regions. The data derive from lake sediment (51%), marine sediment (31%), peat (11%), glacier ice (3%), and other natural archives. The database contains 1319 records, including 157 from the Southern Hemisphere. The multi-proxy database comprises paleotemperature time series based on ecological assemblages, as well as biophysical and geochemical indicators that reflect mean annual or seasonal temperatures, as encoded in the database. This database can be used to reconstruct the spatiotemporal evolution of Holocene temperature at global to regional scales, and is publicly available in Linked Paleo Data (LiPD) format. #------------------ # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: # Grant: #------------------ # Site_Information # Site_Name: MD98-2165 # Location: Indian Ocean # Country: # Northernmost_Latitude: -9.65 # Southernmost_Latitude: -9.65 # Easternmost_Longitude: 118.333333 # Westernmost_Longitude: 118.333333 # Elevation: -2100 #------------------ # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: MD98_2165.Levi.2007 # Earliest_Year: 25827.0 # Most_Recent_Year: 767.0 # Time_Unit: cal yr BP # Core_Length: # Notes: #------------------ # Species # Species_Name: # Species_Code: # Common_Name: #------------------ # Chronology_Information # Chronology: # labcode depth_sample_cm depth_correct_cm mat_dated c14_date c14_1s_err used_age source # LSCE-101505 0 0 G. ruber white 5250 100 no Waelbroeck et al. 2006 # LSCE-001275 16 16 G. ruber white 1650 40 no Waelbroeck et al. 2006 # LSCE-001276 55 55 G. ruber white 1150 40 yes Waelbroeck et al. 2006 # LSCE-001277 135 135 G. ruber white 2210 40 yes Waelbroeck et al. 2006 # LSCE-001278 213 213 G. ruber white 3210 40 yes Waelbroeck et al. 2006 # LSCE-101504 260 260 G. ruber white 3910 90 yes Waelbroeck et al. 2006 # LSCE-101503 320 320 G. ruber white 4740 110 yes Waelbroeck et al. 2006 # LSCE-101502 460 460 G. ruber white 7500 110 yes Waelbroeck et al. 2006 # LSCE-101500 560 560 G. ruber white 10340 120 yes Waelbroeck et al. 2006 # LSCE-101499 600 600 G. ruber white 11430 130 yes Waelbroeck et al. 2006 # LSCE-101498 620 620 G. ruber white 12100 130 yes Waelbroeck et al. 2006 # LSCE-101497 640 640 G. ruber white 13040 150 yes Waelbroeck et al. 2006 # LSCE-101496 682 656 G. ruber white 13590 140 yes Waelbroeck et al. 2006 # LSCE-101495 690 664 G. ruber white 14050 120 yes Waelbroeck et al. 2006 # LSCE-101494 700 674 G. ruber white 14360 140 yes Waelbroeck et al. 2006 # LSCE-101493 706 680 G. ruber white 15080 160 yes Waelbroeck et al. 2006 # LSCE-101492 716 690 G. ruber white 15660 130 yes Waelbroeck et al. 2006 # LSCE-101491 724 698 G. ruber white 16030 140 yes Waelbroeck et al. 2006 # LSCE-101489 766 740 G. ruber white 19780 170 yes Waelbroeck et al. 2006 # LSCE-101488 800 774 G. ruber white 22330 220 yes Waelbroeck et al. 2006 # Sampling depth corrected to remove a gap between 650 and 677 cm due coring perturbation #------------------ # Variables # # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-longname components (9 components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, archive, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) # ## depth depth,,,centimeter,,paleoceanography,,,N,Sample depth ## age age,,,calendar year before present,,paleoceanography,,,N, ## mgca_ruber magnesium/calcium,Globigerinoides ruber,,millimole per mole,,paleoceanography,,,N, # #------------------ # Data: # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format -
