During the late glacial period, the ocean surface warmed rapidly to present-day temperatures1, whereas the land warmed only slowly, as evidenced by the lagged response of forest and glaciers2,3. However, in the Holocene epoch, land-based records suggest strong warming whereas marine records indicate that ocean surface temperatures cooled. Here we present reconstructions of summer temperature for Campbell Island, in the Southern Ocean, over the past 16,500 years based on fossil pollen. We find a pronounced warming 12,500–11,000 years ago, a cooling until 9,200 years ago, and a rapid warming to a peak between 6,000 and 5,000 years ago, followed by minor cool intervals from 5,200–4,000, 3,000–1,700 and 700–100 years ago. As expected, our temperature reconstructions show a late glacial lag behind nearby records of sea surface temperature6,7, and opposing trends in the Holocene. We suggest that this discrepancy arises because land-based reconstructions record summer temperatures, whereas marine proxies generally reflect annual temperatures. We conclude that the divergence of the records therefore reflects changes in the seasonality of atmospheric heat transport. As atmospheric heat transport is tied to the Southern Hemisphere westerly winds, we attribute our observed changes to shifts in the position and intensity of the southern westerlies. #------------------ # Publication # Authors: Kaufman, D., N. We present a global compilation of quality-controlled, published, temperature-sensitive proxy records extending back 12,000 years through the Holocene. Data were compiled from 679 sites where time series cover at least 4000 years, are resolved at sub-millennial scale (median spacing of 400 years or finer) and have at least one age control point every 3000 years, with cut-off values slackened in data-sparse regions. The data derive from lake sediment (51%), marine sediment (31%), peat (11%), glacier ice (3%), and other natural archives. The database contains 1319 records, including 157 from the Southern Hemisphere. The multi-proxy database comprises paleotemperature time series based on ecological assemblages, as well as biophysical and geochemical indicators that reflect mean annual or seasonal temperatures, as encoded in the database. This database can be used to reconstruct the spatiotemporal evolution of Holocene temperature at global to regional scales, and is publicly available in Linked Paleo Data (LiPD) format. #------------------ # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: # Grant: #------------------ # Site_Information # Site_Name: Mount Honey # Location: Australia/New Zealand>New Zealand # Country: # Northernmost_Latitude: -52.5 # Southernmost_Latitude: -52.5 # Easternmost_Longitude: 169.1625 # Westernmost_Longitude: 169.1625 # Elevation: 120 #------------------ # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: MountHoney.McGlone.2010 # Earliest_Year: 12563.0 # Most_Recent_Year: -17.917 # Time_Unit: cal yr BP # Core_Length: # Notes: #------------------ # Species # Species_Name: # Species_Code: # Common_Name: #------------------ # Chronology_Information # Chronology: # depth age SD age_type material # 28.0 574.0 32.0 age14C peat # 45.0 911.0 31.0 age14C peat # 66.0 1631.0 34.0 age14C peat # 100.0 2397.0 33.0 age14C peat # 140.0 2974.0 36.0 age14C peat # 180.0 3685.0 35.0 age14C peat # 224.0 4912.0 35.0 age14C peat # 255.0 49025.0 41.0 age14C peat # 278.0 5587.0 38.0 age14C peat # 295.0 6256.0 38.0 age14C peat # 304.0 7892.0 49.0 age14C peat # 315.0 8223.0 43.0 age14C peat # 324.0 9078.0 45.0 age14C pollen # 333.0 9729.0 54.0 age14C peat # 338.0 10396.0 50.0 age14C pollen # 357.0 11236.0 80.0 age14C pollen # 371.0 12823.0 69.0 age14C peat # 378.0 13045.0 71.0 age14C peat # 378.0 12918.0 70.0 age14C peat # 390.0 13648.0 73.0 age14C peat # 396.0 10320.0 170.0 age14C pollen # 396.0 12679.0 55.0 age14C plant fragments #------------------ # Variables # # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-longname components (9 components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, archive, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) # ## age age,,,calendar year before present,,pollen;climate reconstructions,,,N, ## SHCal04Age age,,,calendar year before present,,pollen;climate reconstructions,,,N,age using SHCal04 ## ageUncertainty age,,unspecified margin of error, year,,pollen;climate reconstructions,,,N,using SHCal04 ## temperature surface air temperature,,,degree Celsius,Jan,pollen;climate reconstructions,,modern analogue technique,N, # #------------------ # Data: # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format -
