They are from five lakes in mid-southern and western Norway and one in central Sweden. When comparing the chironomid-inferred July air temperatures, there are many time segments with a poor among-lake fit in inferred temperatures. Possible environmental variables influencing the fossil chironomid assemblages are discussed using a modern Norwegian calibration data set to indicate taxon–environment relationships. These analyses indicate that local changes in pH, water chemistry, and productivity at times may have overridden the regional temperature signal. In addition, other causes of poor among-site temperature fit are discussed, in particular those related to chronological uncertainties. Holocene temperature inferences from single cores based on chironomids may not always be able to provide a reliable regional temperature signal, but can act as a guide from which hypotheses about past environmental conditions can be tested with the aid of chironomid-inferred temperatures from several sites and from other environmental proxies. We have obtained a regional picture of Holocene summer temperature change by developing a consensus reconstruction based on the overall temperature signal from all six sites. This consensus is developed by fitting a smoother through all 330 site-specific temperature-deviations from the Holocene mean. The consensus temperature deviations vary from −0.8 °C at 8800 cal years BP to +0.8 °C at 6500 cal years BP. #------------------ # Publication # Authors: Kaufman, D., N. McKay, C. Routson, M. Erb, B. We present a global compilation of quality-controlled, published, temperature-sensitive proxy records extending back 12,000 years through the Holocene. Data were compiled from 679 sites where time series cover at least 4000 years, are resolved at sub-millennial scale (median spacing of 400 years or finer) and have at least one age control point every 3000 years, with cut-off values slackened in data-sparse regions. The data derive from lake sediment (51%), marine sediment (31%), peat (11%), glacier ice (3%), and other natural archives. The database contains 1319 records, including 157 from the Southern Hemisphere. The multi-proxy database comprises paleotemperature time series based on ecological assemblages, as well as biophysical and geochemical indicators that reflect mean annual or seasonal temperatures, as encoded in the database. This database can be used to reconstruct the spatiotemporal evolution of Holocene temperature at global to regional scales, and is publicly available in Linked Paleo Data (LiPD) format. #------------------ # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: # Grant: #------------------ # Site_Information # Site_Name: Vestre Oykjamyrtorn # Location: Europe>Northern Europe>Scandinavia>Norway # Country: Norway # Northernmost_Latitude: 59.82 # Southernmost_Latitude: 59.82 # Easternmost_Longitude: 6 # Westernmost_Longitude: 6 # Elevation: 594 #------------------ # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: VestreOykjamytjorn.Velle.2005 # Earliest_Year: 13070.78964 # Most_Recent_Year: -53.464696604 # Time_Unit: cal yr BP # Core_Length: # Notes: #------------------ # Species # Species_Name: # Species_Code: # Common_Name: #------------------ # Chronology_Information # Chronology: # age_type Top Depth of Date Bottom Depth of Date age Uncertainty plus material # Core top 0.0 0.0 -51.0 nan nan # age14C 350.0 340.0 235.0 45.0 Plant macrofossil # age14C 830.0 820.0 1530.0 30.0 Plant macrofossil # age14C 1310.0 1300.0 2830.0 40.0 Plant macrofossil # age14C 1790.0 1780.0 4590.0 45.0 Plant macrofossil # age14C 2020.0 2010.0 5930.0 50.0 Plant macrofossil # age14C 2180.0 2170.0 6880.0 50.0 Plant macrofossil # age14C 2280.0 2270.0 7630.0 55.0 Plant macrofossil # age14C 2420.0 2410.0 7990.0 55.0 Plant macrofossil # age14C 3030.0 3020.0 10070.0 50.0 Plant macrofossil # age14C 3330.0 3320.0 10730.0 60.0 Plant macrofossil # age14C 3560.0 3540.0 11170.0 60.0 Plant macrofossil #------------------ # Variables # # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-longname components (9 components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, archive, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) # ## depth depth,,,centimeter,,insect;paleolimnology;climate reconstructions,,,N, ## age age,,,calendar year before present,,insect;paleolimnology;climate reconstructions,,,N, ## temperature lake surface temperature,midge assemblage,,degree Celsius,Jul,insect;paleolimnology;climate reconstructions,,,N,153-lake Norwegian training set (Brooks and Birks 2000; 2001); NOT corrected for isostatic rebound; WAPLS ## ReliabIeYN1 notes,,,,,insect;paleolimnology;climate reconstructions,,,C,Data are reliable (Yes or No) # #------------------ # Data: # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing_Values: nan # depth age temperature ReliabIeYN1 0.0 -53.464696604 12.8114 y 4.0 -19.60527692 13.375415 y 8.0 14.94405024 13.518745 y 12.0 50.9191243 13.345875 y 16.0 89.0558146 13.632605 y 28.0 223.7942768 12.94755 y 37.0 353.8972919 12.549595 y 45.0 495.2402875 12.914255 y 52.0 636.7420712 12.90853 y 60.0 815.7604021 12.46822 y 68.0 1009.95813 12.71721 y 76.0 1215.916739 12.702615 y 84.0 1430.218727 12.70922 y 92.0 1651.04971 13.08664 y 100.0 1881.446799 13.089075 y 108.0 2125.361325 12.208525 y 116.0 2386.744618 12.658105 y 124.0 2669.548009 12.835515 y 132.0 2977.722108 12.77247 y 136.0 3142.375795 12.66922 y 140.0 3314.073228 12.5898 y 144.0 3492.650757 13.162025 y 148.0 3677.94473 13.231365 y 152.0 3869.791496 12.87676 y 156.0 4068.027407 13.0182 y 160.0 4272.48881 12.63208 y 164.0 4483.012055 12.46921 y 168.0 4699.433492 13.31041 y 172.0 4921.58947 13.08721 y 176.0 5149.316338 13.05694 y 184.0 5620.650583 13.41177 y 192.0 6109.225729 13.66057 y 196.0 6358.000325 13.5149 y 200.0 6608.699795 13.3588019 y 204.0 6860.504359 12.7505038 y 208.0 7111.967187 12.5382057 y 212.0 7360.903228 12.9949076 y 216.0 7605.085082 12.0197095 y 220.0 7842.31302 12.0775114 y 224.0 8071.258067 11.6480133 y 226.0 8182.525886 11.3312152 y 228.0 8291.616399 12.2578171 y 230.0 8398.527082 12.578619 y 232.0 8503.41954 11.7555209 y 234.0 8606.514784 12.1766 y 236.0 8708.033908 11.93656 y 238.0 8808.198005 11.91479 y 240.0 8907.228168 11.91405 y 244.0 9102.746637 11.09574 y 246.0 9199.485642 10.8773 y 248.0 9295.564904 11.76203 y 252.0 9485.75352 12.7457 y 254.0 9579.867535 12.77829 y 256.0 9673.331127 12.09552 y 258.0 9766.146627 11.54925 y 260.0 9858.316365 11.25232 y 264.0 10040.72787 11.70409 y 268.0 10220.58429 11.37912 y 272.0 10397.90426 10.52995 y 274.0 10485.6189 11.62655 y 276.0 10572.70642 12.21918 y 280.0 10745.00942 11.34995 y 284.0 10914.83188 10.60325 y 288.0 11082.19246 9.19942 y 292.0 11247.10978 9.39015 y 294.0 11328.0 9.62241 y 296.0 11409.6025 9.9161 y 298.0 11489.94546 9.46089 y 300.0 11569.68926 4.1604 y 304.0 11727.3871 5.93526 y 308.0 11882.31922 5.5493 y 312.0 12033.1985 6.63308 y 316.0 12178.60967 4.61232 y 320.0 12317.13745 5.32234 y 324.0 12447.36656 5.09804 y 328.0 12567.88171 4.45617 y 332.0 12651.0419 4.29416 y 336.0 12774.30798 6.31853 y 340.0 12859.933 9.86435 y 344.0 12936.38257 9.93309 y 348.0 13005.91526 9.12037 y 352.0 13070.78964 9.24391 y
